I've never heard of it.  There's a St. John's University in New York.

Where did you see this town mentioned?

Does this map help at all ? The city of Johnstown is mostly surrounded by the town of Johnstown, of which it was once a part when it was a village. Also adjacent to the city is the city of Gloversville.

In a London newspaper, under the title ,'long lost relatives' I direct quote;

Hinds (Edward) with his son went to New York in March 1889; last heard of in St. John's town.  Cecilia Hinds inquires.

Johnstown in New York State (as per link in my previous post) used to be called John's Town.
I have been told that the entire family of Edward Hinds died in the Johnstown floods.
This is untrue, only Edward and his son go missing.  The rest of the family continued to live in London.
The son appears to have settled in Virginia, marrying a Tina Ferguson.  There are some ancestry trees reflecting this although the couple do not appear to have had children.
So what happened to Edward?  Did he do a disappearing act or did he drown in a flood in Johnstown NY? There is a flood in July of that year in which approximately 20 people died, hence my interest!

There's a list of flood victims here - http://www.jaha.org/FloodMuseum/flood_victims.pdf - and he does not appear on it.

Thanks for your replies

Shellyesq, you are quite right he does not appear in that list however that is the Johnstown flood that happened in May. There was another flood in John's Town NY in the July of 1889. I wondered if he in fact died in that flood.

Sandra, yes I found that record, I would need to obtain the marriage certificate to prove it was my Edward's son but I feel it's likely, especially as his occupation was a stone cutter, his father was a stone mason.

There is an E.W. Hinds who married in West Virginia and reported being born London, England - http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view2.aspx?FilmNumber=580547&ImageNumber=436

Also a possible Edward in the 1910 census - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MPNZ-WNX
