Hi I have various posts looking for my grandfather's siblings who travelled abroad

but now I would like to investigate how far back this family go in Scotland

My grandfather's grandfather was Duncan MacDermid born c1829 died 1903 m Agnes McFarlane b1832
They are on census together from 1851 at carteraigs st pollockshaw.as Mcdermaid

1861 with sons Walter 4 and Duncan 1 in Carmyl ......mcDearmid
1871 mcDearmid
1881 mcdiarmid
1901clyd house oldmonkland with son John and grandchildren mcDermid

Duncan MacDermid.s death age 74 gives parents names as John macdermid handloom weaver and Janet Renfrew

Her death was 1867 aged 79 main St pollockshire  (+edit sorry forfarlan cant read my own notes )

But I can't find her between her marriage in 1826 ( no extra information on that record ).looks like in Pollo..shaw
and death registered by son duncan as widow of John .

And don't know which John to look at with all the possible spellings and no place of birth

I couldn't find a duncan born 1829 in 1941 census either

Any suggestions of a spelling I may not have tried ? Or any other angle ??

There is a Janet Renfrew born c1788 living at King Street, Pollockshaws in 1841 with a 12 year old Duncan Renfrew and a 15 year old Agnes Renfrew. I wonder if this might be them. It is not unusual for a woman to be listed under her maiden name in 1841, even if married or widowed. Strange that the children would also be recorded under this name, but the place, christian name and age tally for Duncan so might be worth looking at.

So it would seem John died before 1841 I.ll take another look

A Janet McDarmid born 1791 is living at Main Street, house no 39 Pollockshaws in 1851 with daughter Agnes age 24. This would seem to back up the 1841 entry as above.

Ha ha that's yet another spelling

Scotlands people is playing up so I can't check on Agnes birth

Or look at Janet's death cert again to see what number main Street she died at.but it was definitely the same street .

son duncan was aged 22 with wife another Agnes aged 24 at carteraigs st in 1851

Next  step to find more about John will either be his death or the childrens births .
The marriage record was just 2 lines no info about place of origin or parents .

There's no such place as Pollockshire. There are a Pollokshields and a Pollokshaws.

I see that her death was registered in Eastwood, Renfrewshire.
