Marriage lookup - St Matthews, Cambridge. Transcription error?!
« on: Wednesday 26 October 16 22:07 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Could anyone help me look up a marriage certificate from St Matthews Parish Church in Cambridge?

I got a copy of the marriage certificate bu I think the transcription might be wrong?

I am looking for the marriage of Stanley John Compton and Rose Bertha Shipp 15/05/1918.

The certified copy I received says Stanley Albert Compton ??? ??? ???

Is there anyone in Cambridge who could view the original for me?

Thanks so much

The GRO index clearly shows him as Stanley A Compton

EDIT

What does his signature read as on the cert

Marriage Certificates cannot be looked up.
You'll need the Parish Register entry.
Should be at Cambridgeshire Archives.

On your other post - this advice was given at reply number 22.

The Cambridgeshire Archves has the deposited original register which contains the actual original signatures of the groom and bride as well as the witnesses.

Send them an email, explain you have a copy from the GRO and there is some uncertainty as to the name of the groom As you know the church and date of marriage ask them nicely if they would be able to double check their copy to see what name is entered. It might be worthwhile attaching a scan of the cert you have so they know you have and and aren't just asking for a free look-up.

Hi all,

I cannot get to cambridge so I was hoping there might be someone local who might be able to view the actual certificate for me....

or am I misunderstanding - is there a way to view it online?

Sorry, I'm new to this, not sure what all the terms mean.

Have you seen my reply above?

Thanks Carole, I will call them tomorrow. Hopefully they will be able to help but it looks like they charge for their service to go look at the documents so I doubt they will do it for free :-(

Family History isn't free! ;D
We all have to pay sometimes.

I think the worst era to research is the last 100 years - the most recent times?
Most of the records are closed for 100 years, which makes life difficult.

Get back to 1911 and there are lots of records to make life easier. ;D
