I have found this death record from British Columbia that may or may not be for your John. Some info matches, such as birth date also seen on the 1938 border crossing (but not year) and mother's maiden surname (but there is no forename). Place of birth is given as Montreal but I don't see a baptismal record for him there. Unfortunately, info on death records is what the informant understands to be the facts.
