Good morning and thank you for any help that can be given.
I have found my 3xG grandmother "Fanny Oxtoby" in the 1861 census for Hull Holy Trinity (RG9/3589/19/32) living with her brother William (who has the same name as their father). The confusion that I have and that I seek advice over is the relationships of the rest of the household.
- William's wife is Hannah
- William has a stepson called Charles F Taylor
- William has a niece called Eleanor Frobisher
- I first assumed that as Charles' surname was Taylor, this must have been a previous married name of Hannah's. However, there is a marriage between a William Oxtoby and a Hannah Taylor on 10 Sep 1851 where Hannah is recorded as a spinster and her father is also "Taylor".
- This leads me to believing that maybe Charles F was born out of wedlock with Taylor being Hannah's maiden name, however, I cannot find a birth or baptism to confirm his parents.
- The neice Eleanor must either be a sister of Hannah (Taylor) that married a Frobisher (unlikley as she is only 14) or maybe Hannah wasn't originally a Taylor after all and was a Frobisher.
- Alternatively, Eleanor could be the daughter of a sister of William who married a Frobisher. Again, I have been unable to find a birth or baptism for Eleanor to prove or disprove this. Nor have I been able to find an appropriate marriage between an Oxtoby and a Frobisher.
It is frustrating that there seems to be so much waiting to be found in this census entry but I have been unable to unpick it.
Any advice and wisdom is very much appreciated!
Nic
