Just to say that a separate 1851 entry for James Marigold on FindMyPast British Army, Worldwide Index
lists  James as being in the 11th (Or Prince Albert's Own) Hussars as  the birth for Matthew W which I posted before as below ;D

Just to add another spanner in the works FindMyPast has an British Armed Forces And Overseas Birth

Matthew W   Marigold

Regiment   11th Hussars

I couldn't get to sleep so checked my messages again.
So this could be our Matthew William Merrigold.
I wonder what else I can check to verify all of this?
Seems likely as there is really nothing else to go on. Can I order his birth cert. on line from GRO?
Really think this is marvellous.

I do think it stands a really good chance of being your Matthew William Merrigold.   It is such an unusual name.

Looking at the GRO website you should be able to order the Birth Cert from them and also the probable marriage cert of his parents in 1850 in Ipswich

I can't see James and Elizabeth Marigold post 1851- Could James have died abroad in the Crimea War?

Yes, will find the birth of Matthew William and order this and also try and look at James Merrigold's army record.
Can't thank you enough.
Will let you know how I get on and with any updates.

Do you think that Matthew William was born before they got married; hence the confusion and the name Hubbard?
I found an Elisabeth Hubbard with father George born 16 Oct. 1825 Bawdsey, Suffolk which is perfect. Father was George but mother seemed to be Elisabeth (?)  - maybe Lucy was second wife?

And marriage of Elizabeth Hubbard on 4th Feb. 1851 to James Mariford in Saint Matthew, Ipswich, Suffolk.  I will try and get the original parish record and view this.  The transcriptons can be annoying, but understandably hard to read.

There's a Jas Marigold of the 11th Hussars in the court martial lists for October 1846 & May 1847 in COventry. I don't have a sub to see the record on Fold3.

1841 he's in Kensington Barracks

Another lead.  Tks.  Will follow that one up somehow.  My local genealogy group may be able to help.
I did have a sub for a short time and then cancelled two months ago.

Found the birth of Matthew Hubbard M. qtr in Ipswich Vol 12 Page 396
So it would seem that Matthew was born before parents married.  I must order this one.

Have marriage for James Marigold and Elisabeth Hubbard in Ipswich Vo. 12 Page 487.  How do you order these certs. when they are not on the GRO website?

Also, have a marriage for a Lucy Hubbard and John Skinner in Woodbridge, Suffolk M qtr. in 1858. So that looks like our William Merrigold with Lucy Skinner and John Skinner (says a nephew) born Ipswich and Lucy born in Bawdsey in the 1861 census.  The age is out a bit.   Seems he used Matthew William at times; and others just the William.

Would like to find Elisabeth now and am following up on Jas. Marigold and his court martial and army record.  Have had no luck with the Archives at Kew website, so will try something else.

Possibly Matthew William was listed as Hubbard in 1851 simply because this grandparents said he was their grandson William?? Re the birth reg of Matthew Hubbard in 1849 Ipswich -I wonder if his parents  registered when they came home from Ireland??

You can order the marriage certs on the GRO with the ref  numbers on the  FreeBMD etc

I think James Marigold may well have  been born in Shenstone, Staffordshire.  His birthplace in 1851 is very badly written and there is a bapt on Anc for a James Marygold 28 March 1819 Shenstone, Staffordshire with parents William and Ann

This may well be the family in 1841 mistranscribed living in Little Aston, Shenstone

William Mangold 60 Carpenter
Ann Mangold    55
Thomas Mangold 25 Carpenter
Mary Mangold    30
Emma Mangold    15
John Towers    15 Carpenter
Susan Wright    50 Independent
Ann Harper    70 Independent
Henny Hitcher    3

Fingers crossed re the certificate  and 1850 marriage
