Thomas Hudson of Shotley Bridge
« on: Saturday 16 March 19 18:18 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any basic information on Thomas Hudson who was an innkeeper who died in Shotley Bridge in 1843.  I would be grateful if anyone could help with his dates of birth, marriage and death, his wife's maiden name and his residence.  No more than that.  Many thanks.

From the 41 census he's at Shotley Bridge with wife Ann and family.

She appears to be Ann Joplin(g), married at Kirk Merrington in 9/7/1825.

Thank you so much, all I need to know now is exactly where he died!  It seems a surprise that he would be buried in Auckland district but since his wife came from Kirk Merrington, I expect that is the area he came from and his family wanted him home for burial.  This information is greatly appreciated.

Hi Neville, he was indeed buried at Merrington.
You can see the entry at the bottom of the left-hand page (if you are a signed-in member) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-64P7-QQ1?i=443&wc=9K5S-HZQ%3A13618101%2C29592401%2C29592402&cc=1309819

Hello JenB

Thank you for that.  At the moment he is only a casual entry in the village history.  News of his death was picked up from an advertisement in the press announcing a meeting of his creditors.  There are no other references to him that I have come across in local records so I was intrigued to see him described as an innkeeper.  Although it is just a village now, it was a busy market town then and all the known inns had innkeepers at that time.

If this man was in an unknown inn, my interest would be much more intense!  And that is possible if he was insolvent and the inn closed and never re-opened.

His occupation in the 1841 census is definitely 'Inn Keeper', residence Shotley Bridge.

Agonisingly no name for the inn - is there any sort of address?
