Thanks I will have a look at subsequent records, now I know how to do this!  It is more challenging when there are no middle names to go on too...  I already have the marriage details and the last census record I have is 1939.  Perhaps death details would be good if that could be found....

According to the Civil Registration Death Index (on Ancestry) - there is a William Brown born abt 1862, who died in Bristol Registration District in Q/E March 1942 aged 80.

Volume number 6a

If you intend ordering the death certificate from the General Register Office at Southport
https://www.gro.gov.uk

You will need that information. If you have not ordered a certificate before you will need to register on the site - then go to 'order certificates on line' -- it will cost £11.00 unfortunately and there is always the chance it may not be him --but that one looks the most likely -- correct age at death and right area (unless the family had moved).

Yes Boo -- I agree with you. Do you know I looked for a probate and couldn't see it! Need to go to Specsavers.

Jet -- if you wish to -- you can order that Will on line from;

https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate

It will cost £10 (or did) - and you will receive email notification when it's ready for you to view and download.

(Please forgive me if you already know this.)

Very interesting probate details...and mentions the youngest son Malcolm too.   I suppose £4,000 odd would be a good sum of money in 1942!  Not sure how much more info the will would give, but thanks for the offer anyway.

Thanks for all your time and research to date.....
