Medical doctor records
« on: Thursday 30 May 19 17:46 BST (UK) »
Looking to find any records/details for a William Brown who was registered as a medical doctor/surgeon in the Bristol area in the early 1900s.  He was born in 1862 in Ayrshire, Scotland.   In the 1939 census record he resided at 3 Carlton Mansions Richmond Park Road, Bristol CB, Gloucestershire England, but noted as retired by then.
Any information or leads most welcome...

JET

Jet -- what sort of information are you seeking please? It's not clear from your message.

Are you wanting to find him on earlier census records - or details of where he practised from old directories perhaps?
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Did he live in Fishponds, Bristol? If so he is in the medical directory in 1890.

Not sure to be honest if he lived in Fishponds - I dont have an awful lot of info on him other than his marriage and family details.  Geographically dont know if Fishponds would be near to his address in Bristol either.   Sorry not more helpful!

Do you have access to Ancestry?

The medical directories are on that site -- if it is the same person it gives where he qualified and what he has done medically up to then.

If you have a problem send me a personal message.

The William Brown I have found in Fishponds, Bristol and born in Scotland was born in 1862 ish - wife Mary, also born Scotland. Several children all born Fishponds, Bristol. This will be the one I have found on the 1890 medical register and later registers.

So -- it's the right William Brown who appears on the medical register in 1890.

If you have access to Ancestry -- go to Card Catalogue and insert 'medical' as your search term. You will see medical registers appear. Click this and in the search box which appears insert name and the date of 1890 -- you will see him listed as being at Fishponds.

There is quite a lot of detail about when/where he qualified and what he has done. You will find additional info in the subsequent registers - where he is again at Fishponds.

Yes that does sound like the right William...his wife was Mary.  I have access to Ancestry, so will follow this up now.
Many thanks for your help in moving things along!!

Jet -- you will also find him in subsequent years - but I don't think the registers were issued every year.

At least you know he was the William Brown in Fishponds on those registers. (There are quite a few William Browns!)

I am still not sure if that is all you wanted though - or whether you wanted Roots chatters to find previous records such as marriage and earlier census records.

If you do -- just come back to us.
