Fascinating thread thread!   Just a thought - has anyone found him on the 1939 Register??  We can't post details but there is a Thomas W Hastings of about the right age with a relevant occupation that would be worth looking at

Also found  a death of a Thomas W Hastings in Bromley, Kent in 1949 aged B4 84 that would fit this man

Yes, interesting! Age possibly a year out but it would be interesting to compare the birthday (day/month) with that of Thomas Stride (see my reply #18 ;) ).

HASTINGS Thomas William of 5 Stanhope Avenue Hayes Kent died 19 August 1949.  Probate London 5 November 1949 to Thomas Antony Baines solicitor.  Effects £8029 4s 7d.

If the family recollection of the will reading is correct, then one would expect it to be an interesting document.

Thomas William Hastings

That’s definitely right as Reginald and his wife Emily are going to that address in a 1934 passenger list.

Just to muddy the waters a bit more, in 1891 with wife Mary there are 2 sons - Thomas Frederick Valentine birth Mar.1886 Shoreditch mmn Absolent, other son Herbert H. 3 born Walthamstow BUT birth entry shows Herbert Henry Hastings birth Dec.1887 West Ham, mmn MacDonald???

That's my family... Oddly, it's the middle child who has the different mother's maiden name.  I concluded that Mary MacDonald=Mary Absolent... 1911 Census has Mary Hastings with children Herbert and Edith.  It shows she gave birth to 3 children, all of whom were still living.  Eldest son Thomas Frederick Valentine Hastings is on his own, so all three children are accounted for.
I was thinking that maybe Mary Absolent's mother's maiden name was MacDonald and she was just confused when she answered the question. Or...?

I haven't found her mother, but her father in her 15 Nov 1885 marriage with Hastings was John Absolent, carpenter, of 37 Rising Hills Street, Clerkenwell, London.

I did not order it.  If it ends up that we think he is the same person who later became Thomas Frederick William Lewis Hastings, then I will order it.
The sources I have for TFWL Hastings all have birth 1864 St Pancras.
But he seems to also be with the second (or third?) family in the 1901 and 1911 Censuses as being born in Bridgwater (Wiltshire or Somerset).

So now it's a little less certain that they are the same person.
