Who is our mystery Canadian visitor?
« on: Friday 21 June 19 22:13 BST (UK) »
The young man in the centre of this photograph visited my family for my great grandma's 80th birthday in 1957. I believe great grandma's brother (Herbert Woodward, b 1874) may have emigrated from England to Canada in 1891 so this is possibly a descendent of his. It would be amazing if anyone happened to recognise this man and could tell me who he is.

Here's hoping!
Joanne

From findmypast:
A Herbert Woodward age 17 sailed to Canada on the Parisian on 26 Mar 1891 going to Halifax; with many other boys of similar ages & some 11 yr olds - may be 'home children'?.
There is a Herbert Woodward aged 17 labourer English in the 1891 census for Halifax city dated 4 May 1891 with the same boys as on the ship.

Can't see a marriage on https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com.

I suggest you try the 1900, 1910, 1920 censuses to see if Herbert appears with a family.

The Herbert H Woodward born Jan 1874 in British Columbia District 8 in 1911 immigrated in 1910, with a brother Albert born Jan 1882 also immigrated 1910, so not your Herbert.

He looks late teens/early 20s. Are there any  Canadian Air Force records available?

Not that young, he's a sergeant and not aircrew which suggests mid to late twenties.

UK Incoming Passenger List - Montreal to Liverpool -William Humphrey aged 50 years - Elizabeth Humphrey aged  48 - 20 August 1948 on the Ascania - going to 18 Green Street Middleton. William was an agent. Intended to live in England.

So could the photo be a friend they met in Canada ? Or someone who served here during WW2  ???

This couple lived at that same address in 1939

If William Humphrey was born around 1897 (there is a date on the 1939 register) could this be the connection to a Woodward and Humphrey ???

marriage registered June 1897 - Barrow S - 7a 334 - William Humphrey and Louisa Woodward   ???
