Looking for biological GG Robert Bennett b. 1880 Hutchesontown
« on: Monday 18 November 19 02:54 GMT (UK) »
I purchased my grandfathers birth certificate on SP and discovered he was illegitimate and the 1901 record was amended to add the name of his biological father Robert Bennett, a mason, living at 55 Ingleside Street.  The 1901 census shows Robert age 20 living with his parents Daniel Duncan Bennett b 1853 Wigtown and his mother, Jane Graham b. 1856 St Boswells at 538 Calder Street.  A valuation roll for 1905 had Duncan Bennett at 55 Ingleside, so they moved after the census and before the birth.  A researcher of the Bennett Graham family tree on Ancestry attached a WW1 pension record for a Robert Bennett Service no 92720 Ref No 5/MB/5764.  Where can I obtain more information about this Robert Bennett to ensure I am on the right track?

You could try here;

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Have you found him in 1911 census?

I've found a service record for Robert Bennett - regt. no.92720, 2/3rd. Welsh Field Ambulance on FindMyPast.

Not really anything about his origins on there, born 1879 - lived in Landore, Swansea before and after the war and was married with children.

He married an Ellen Roberts 24/2/1905 Swansea.   Free Index for 1911 shows he and his family were indeed in Landore, Swansea - however, his birthplace is given as Exeter, Devon so definitely not your man.

An Ancestry researcher strikes again - why don't they check their facts!

Thank you Rosinish and Annette 7.  I have not found him on the 1911 census yet.  His paternal grandfather Robert had many children and if they all named their first born son Robert I am looking for a needle in a haystack.  There are two Robert Bennett’s from Rutherglen who died in WWI, do you think FindMyPast would have details of those soldiers?  Definitely born in Hutchesontown.  PS the researcher said Robert fathered another child in 1903 only took 6 credits on SP to debunk that theory too.

You say that the fathers details were added to the 1901 record - Have you checked to see what the RCE (Register of Corrected Entries) actually says. It may provide further information as it is possible that either the mother or the Poor relief Board may have taken him to Court to prove paternity.

This gives two possible avenues to check
1. Court records
2. Poor Relief Records.

On the Register of Corrected Entries it states “in an action relating to the Paternity of the child.....at the instance of the child’s mother”. The Sheriff Substitute of Lanarkshire found that said child was the legitimate child of the parties aforesaid.  Are the court records searchable online?

You can double check as a birth at the end of 1903 would be recorded in 1904?

There are 2 entries on SP Soldiers' and airmen's wills but no way of knowing when they were born?

Have you found the parents in 1911?

SP is the only place to view 1911 whether index or image.
