Birth registrations HELP REQUEST

Has anyone any idea how to solve this puzzle? I am trying to help a friend identify her grandmother. The lady was very coy about her identity and even the information on her marriage certificate is inaccurate!
The best that we have to go on is that she was called Mabel or Mabel Claire or Mabel something. We dont have her surname and her father's name was possibly John although that is unreliable!
She consistently gave her birthday as 9 August 1878.
Does anyone know of any way of interrogating the online births databases for an exact date of birth. My first pass showed over 900 Mabels born in that quarter!
Any idea would be welcome short of trying to eliminate each of the 900 one by one.
Thanks
David

FreeBMD is compiled from the quarterly returns to the GRO.
Exact dates are only found on the individual certificates.
What surname does she use at marriage?
Who does she name as her father? (Yes, I realise the name may be fictitious!)
What censuses have you found her on?
Is she on the 1939 National Register?

Marriage ? Spouse’s name
https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Births of any children? Mother’s maiden name.
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp
If she was alive in 1939, her birthdate may be confirmed on the register., then look in area of marriage or residence.

That sounds good, there is a probable son on the 1939 register which would fit with that.

Yes she is Mabel Claire Grundy. She was married under the name of Mabel (surname) Claire giving her father's name as John, a gentleman. She used Claire as the surname for her childrens' births. She told her family that her father came from Warwickshire and was killed in a hunting accident. She gives Leamington as her birthpalce in the 1901 and 1911 census returns.
As far as anyone can tell - and several people besides me have looked. None of the 'facts' which she supplied bears scrutiny!
