Elizabeth Allan
« on: Saturday 13 June 20 16:48 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am looking for more details of my 3x great grandmother , ELIZABETH ALLAN/ALLEN.
I cannot find a birth or marriage registered for her.
I believe she was born in Keithhall, Inverurie around 1808.
Her parents were William ALLAN and Keith(?) ROSS
She married (?) John BLACK , probably in METHLICK, Aberdeenshire.
Elizabeth died on 20th June 1863 and is buried in Methlick Kirkyard.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat

Looking at the 1841 & 1851 entries - John was considerably older than Elizabeth.  None of the SP birth entries for any of the children on the 1841 & 1851  census have Elizabeth's name - only John's

Welcome from me too  :)

There is quite a detailed tree on Ancestry for this line (see www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/10305252/person/322085611774/facts). Not sure if you have a subscription there to be able to access.

Apart from Elizabeth, there was potentially at least another three children for William and wife Keith Ross. There are no entries showing for them in the birth & baptism database on Scotlands People. Being pre registration in Scotland (from 1855) lots of reasons why there are no entries showing.

William Allen and wife Keith Ross look to have lived past the start of official registration so you will be able to confirm their parents' details from their death certs on SP. The dates I seeming on the a/try tree for them are:

William Allan
Birth 26 JUN 1781 Cairnbrogie, Tarves, Aberdeenshire
Death 7 DEC 1862 Tillyhilt, Tarves, Aberdeenshire

Kieth Rutha Ross
Birth 12TH JULY 1778 Keithhall, Aberdeenshire
Death 17 JAN 1872 Tillyhilt, Tarves, Aberdeenshire

Always good to verify details for yourself that you may find on family trees if original certificates are not included. There are a number of original certs included though that you should find helpful when looking at the family.

Some burial details here for others in the family www.findagrave.com/memorial/204868176

Can I ask whether there is any significance in the absence of Elizabeths name from the children's SP entries?   I noticed that other entries for the same period show both parents names

The siblings showing on the family tree linked above were Agnes and Alexander. There looks to also have been a sister Isabel. William and Keith (showing as Rutha...could this simply be a mistranscription?) show with their daughter in 1861:

John Tough 42
Isabel Tough 45 b. Tarves (died on 3 Sep 1885 in Methlick)
William Allen 80 father in law late agr lab., b. Tarves, Aberdeenshire
Ritha Allen 83 mother in law, b. Keithhall, Aberdeenshire

Address: Tillyhilt, Tarves Aberdeenshire

Added: This group show together in 1851, farming at the same address. Keith is showing as Rutha there too, so no mistrascription you would think.

Likely more children/ siblings to Elizabeth around.

Carole, it was quite common in Aberdeenshire to only see the name of the father on birth and baptism entries. The style some of the clerks seem to have adopted for a period. A pain really  :-\

This is likely sister Agnes' birth entry on Scotlands People:

Agnes ALLAN
Parent WILLIAM ALLAN/
08/05/1812
229/20 284
Old Meldrum

She shows as born in Old Meldrum around that time on her census entries.

Can't see any entries for Elizabeth, Alexander or Isabel.

Thanks Monica.  I had wondered whether it was linked in some way to couples who were not married but seems to have just been a "local" tradition
