Edward YATES 1838-?

Trying to find what happened to Edward YATES, born 1838 in Halifax, Yorkshire. Came to Nelson in 1842 on the 'Martha Ridgway' with older brother Henry and parents John and Jane.

The parents and Henry eventually ended up in Masterton via Wellington.

He was only a young child when he arrived so may have died young.

No deaths that I can find on the BDM website. Have also trolled through PapersPast. John did not leave a will.

There is a Inquest in 1897 at Archives Wellington relating to a house fire at Edward Yates house at Upper Plain. Believe this is Henry's son Edward who lived in that area.

Do you have a death printout for either parent? If the death was registered after October 1875, the number of children living at his or her death should be recorded. You can then determine whether or not Edward was still alive at that time.

Further to the above mentioned marriage, this could be his probated will?

Of interest is that the death of this Edward Yates on 5.4.1882 does not appear to have been registered. If the same couple as married in reply #1, there is a daughter, Mary Anne whose birth does not appear to have been registered in New Zealand.

Perhaps you could contact the council for details of Edward Yates, who appears to have been buried @ Maketu. Obtaining his age would be helpful.

Daughter Mary Anne may have been born about 1859, so the above marriage in 1870 probably not 'yours'. However it would still be of interest to know how old the Edward Yates who died at Maketu was.
