John Cole baptism
« on: Saturday 19 September 20 08:41 BST (UK) »
Good morning all
I am trying to find the baptism for a John Cole born 1842 Cowhill Glos.  On his marriage to Ann Weeks 1865 he gives his father as Joel.  His baptism does not appear on Familysearch or freereg and I am unable to pin him down on a census pre-marriage.
I would be grateful if anyone could help please
Many thanks

Thank you for your replies.
I did not have the information of address Hengrove House on the marriage record I was looking at nor that his occupation was farmer.  In 1871 & 1881 he is an ag. lab.  There are Coles in Hengrove earlier but not my John as far as I can see.

Yes I'm having the same difficulty as you hence why I have not sent off for the birth cert. to determine parentage.

Apologies for this - where have you seen John's birthplace as Cowhill, Gloucestershire?

I am assuming that it is the 1871 census return - RG10/2587 folio 53 page 2

John - 29 - Ag Lab
Ann - 28
Harriett - 6
Ellen - 4
Frank - 2

I've looked at the birth registrations for Harriett, Ellen and (William) Frank in the Thornbury Registration District - mother's maiden name for Harriett is Monday and Ellen is Mundy.  And there is a marriage entry, in Thornbury RD in 1863 where John Cole and Ann Mundy appear on the same page.

26 September 1863 - Thornbury
John Coles - 21, bachelor, Labourer.  Father:  Charles, Labourer
Ann Mundy - 21, spinster.  Father:  George, Labourer
Witnesses:  George and Emma Mundy

Added:  Frank's birth registration is also with mmn = Mundy, and there is a James Alfred born 1871.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank you so much Bumble - I felt all along something wasn't right but just couldn't work it out myself.  Now I feel I'm back on the right track. (hopefully)
