I too had a horrible childhood Griff.
I worked out that life was awful, ever since if anything nice has happened I have recognised the gift and been glad of the bonus!
I can appreciate that and I feel the same tbh. I value the simple things.
I had a good friend in school who was a Barnardo's boy. It intrigued me that this chap, as young as we were, was so happy with his life, I never heard him moan, he was always laughing.
Strange isn't it, little things like that stick in the mind. That was about 60 years ago and I still remember his name and what he looked like as if it were yesterday

Absolutely gorgeous babies,  love  the  little bobble hat

Told you before I am a twin, I  wasn't expected to live but here I am,  so,  me being the weaker one I suppose,  slept a lot, hardly woke to take my bottle whereas my brother the stronger one always ready for his, here we are now my brother 6ft 2ins and me about 5ft 8

We feel we've such a lot to be grateful for, compared to many others. Got a 'phone call yesterday that's Friday, to go at short notice for first Covid shot, same afternoon. Did it. Not date for top-up shot given to us.
Today, Saturday got letter inviting me / us to book a first Covid shot - Do I need a time machine?

Many thanks Annette ,they took my breath away!
Nothing short of a miracle .
The first photograph and
I thought that little miracle has been here before!

Funny isn’t it ,I always feel I had a happy childhood yet it must have been traumatic to be taken to complete strangers at three  and  a half and just left.
That after an intense bombing raid ,just behind us the next row of houses flattened.
I was with good kind people but have no memories of say a goodnight kiss or a cuddle ,but I can look back with gratitude ,it was up to me .
So much so  that  when I was back in Manchester aged eight I took myself back to Shropshire to stay with those people!
Resilience is built from such experiences.
Perhaps it was a bit of the “ Healthy neglect “ we were taught about
at college ,the sort that is character building as opposed to the “smothering
mothering “  that can  breed wimps.
Whatever we are all here coping and doing marvellously in many cases.
I phoned the family ,well the daughter now93  a little while ago ,she is bedridden now, no answer so perhaps carers there or she is ill again so I will ring again soon.
Keep on carrying on and I don’t mean THAT sort of carrying on!
Viktoria.
