Elizabeth Varlow was baptised on 30 April 1820 at St Peter Liverpooldaughter of Christopher and Jane Varlow. I think they are living in ? Frederick St and Christopher  is a Turner filer. Two years earlier a son Henry was born at that baptism Christopher is stated to be a mechanic. Henry died before Elizabeth was born.

In 1838 Elizabeth appears to have married a William Orrell in Bolton le Moors she states her father is Christopher Varlow. In the 1851 census she and William are living in Sheffield with 4 children. The eldest is called Christopher.

The children are Christopher Varlow 1839,Mary bat 1845,  Matilda 1848, William Henry 1850, Hannah 1852 and James William 1858. The father William dies in 1858.

Somehow Elizabeth now needs to marry and lose a husband called Tipping so she can then marry again!

And she did!

1859 she marries John Tipping in Sheffield.

1861 census Sheffield

Elizabeth Tipping (she’s stated to be married but no husband present) with her children Mary Ann 15, Thomas 5 and James W 5

In 1862 a John Tipping aged 62 dies in Sheffield. He’s buried in St Thomas Cemetery Brightside see Sheffield Indexers.

In 1866 as Elizabeth Tipping she marries in Penistone!

Enjoy writing the saga of Elizabeth Varlow!

Wow! She had a busy life! Imagine all that! Henry probably had no children but he has a lot of Step Children!

Still no sign of them both on the 1871 censuses. That seems to be the shady year!

Cheers for that research! Really interesting.

Fouldes.<br />Any area where our family are.  My branch started around Derbyshire, Nott's and Yorkshire.  We ended up in South Lincolnshire!  So yay!  Course any area with Fouldes in would help!  See my family tree below for what gaps I have!  Cheers!

Would also like to see any Beaumont's from Sheffield as I have lots of family photos & can't identify them!!

I’d have a look for the children in 1871 and maybe Elizabeth is living with them.

I’d didn’t record the districts of birth of all the children but she did seem to move about a lot!

Looking at 3 year old Bertha Bothamley, there is this birth:

3rd q. 1868, Sheffield 9c, 330, Bertha Bottomley, mother's maiden surname Orrell

Marriage: Matilda Orrell + on same page William H Bottomley, 4 q 1866, Sheffield 9c, 664

Well that seems to be them... But Benjamin?! Where has THAT name come from?! I mean it must be him - named as husband AND born around 1832 in Oxton. I suppose it could be a middle name, but it's never been mentioned before!

Well done for THAT detective work! I don't know if I would have found it!!

I has a macabre thought when I woke up this morning. What if Elizabeth was something of a black widow? Not even younger Henry survived her wicked ways!

I suppose if the death certificates showed similar suspicious deaths then maybe!

Whatever happened she did seem unlucky with husbands!
