William Thomas Potter
« on: Friday 30 April 21 22:36 BST (UK) »
Hello I am still looking for my uncle who would have passed away by now or any of his children. His name is William Thomas Potter, born 1908 Farm Rd. Pontlottyn. S.Wales UK. He emigrated to  date: 15/8/1928 From: Southampton,To: Quebec. He was still alive around 1950's because the Salvation Army got intouch with my grandmother about him. I have asked the Salvation army if they would give me a clue to his address at the time. NO. I have corresponded with the Quebec officials and they cannot find him after he landed. It would mean the world to a couple of us "oldies" left in the family - all four of us.
Many thanks, Avril x

Hello Avril,

There seem to be several previous posts about your William....I am going to add some additional information from those posts to help other researchers.

Parents were Samuel and Edith

William had been a miner in Wales

Came to To Canada on 15 Aug 1928 on Empress of France leaving Southampton for Quebec.   Likely a harvester.

Jacquie found a possible return trip for a William T Potter, harvester, back to Southampton, England on the Metagama 28 dec 1928.

William had a relative in Canada called Charles Hippard….who seems to have come to Canada in June of 1928.  Charles died in Alberta 1992.    I just found an obit for him in the Lethbridge Herald.
There is a tree for him on familysearch and I believe there is a tree on Ancestry.    In an earlier thread, I posted a link to a short bio of Charles …on the ourroots site (in a history of Raymond Alberta, at page 474).  The old link no longer works.   Here is a new link to the bio.  It says Charles moved to Raymond Alberta from Saskatoon in 1945.

Have you followed up on Jacquie’s lead – that William may have returned to the UK at the end of 1928?

Have any of the trees showing Charles Hippard shed any light on the whereabouts of William?

Unfortunately, William Thomas arrived after the 1926 Canadian census of the Western Provinces.

The 1931 census will be available around 2023.

I think there had been a suggestion to check the Henderson Directories of the West.  Did William show up in any of these?   If the Salvation Army was able to contact him in Canada in the 1950s, he could show up in a Directory?

In the keywords bar, type Henderson Directory and the city you are interested in.
