Clarification on a 1925 death cert - please
« on: Sunday 18 July 21 07:14 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
In my search for the elusive Richards men, I have the 1925 death cert for one Rebecca Richards (born Williams was Harry) dying 1925, Bendigo, Victoria.

In it, it says 'wife of carter'. Would this indicate that her husband, James, would still be alive?

I have posted this in the Beginners Thread as it started off as a search for James born between Wales and Australia. However, I thought I'd pop it in here and hopefully, someone knowledgeable about Victorian records could help me.  Thanks in advance, stay safe.

Yes,
Still living.  Otherwise it would say widow of carter or simply widow

Sue

ADDING I have just seen JM's thoughts and reply to this same query on the Aust. board and would agree with her interpretation of "not known to be deceased"

The little death notice posted on the Aust thread, seemed to imply she was a woman living without spouse in its tone

The men of this family are proving troublesome. In 1914, he no longer appears with Rebecca in View St, Bendigo in the Census, though he is recorded as living there and being NoK of Percival in the attestation papers in the same year. However, I find no death records which match at all over subsequent years. And, as he was born on voyage from Wales, no record found to confirm birth...

Thanks for your time, Sue.

It was not compulsory to enrol to vote until the 1920s, but there were RICHARDS at 14 Forest St in the 1910s...

Look for a Grocer's carter.

ADD

Perhaps her husband was confined to an old mens home.

Thanks, JM.
Do you know if there are records of such homes and asylums?

:)  If this were for a NSW enquiry,  I would confidently say YES, and that NSW State Archives would be a good starting point.  But I think it would be Victoria, so I am sure that Sue will have a far better understanding of how to go about checking that.

So, for example, if NSW here's a possible start point : https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/liverpool-state-hospital-and-home-guide
and
https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/infirm-destitute-asylums-guide

I should mention that when searching through those mental health records in NSW Archives, that some of the words used to 'label' patients are confronting and would not be used today.

I did do some searching through the Victorian Public Records indexes yesterday but got nothing that would match.  I'm new and Victorian records (though I've lived here all my life), so perhaps  should take another look.

Thanks, JM.

In my searches I see no later real  sign of James in the Bendigo area.

Where he spent his early life remains a mystery too.

Can you clip and post the right hand page of the death certificate of Rebecca for our interest?

Agree with Sue,   My ancient rellies have been online looking through Sands & M.... available at Vic State Library website.    They can find View St and Forest St etc etc, but cannot find James R in the Bendigo listings, they will keep at it though...  :)  :)  :).
