Thanks Angela, now I know Joseph's age,

I found Thomas Adlam in the 1851 with his wife Harriet (Marsh) born c 1817) is there any sign of her in the 1841? they married in 1841 June.
Thanks
Newbie

Thanks for that Newbie - the writing is driving me nuts  ::)

About Joseph's snr's age - I was thinking as I was going through that on some pages the enumerator seems to be following the 1841 rule about rounding ages down to the multiple of 5 below (so Joseph could be 55 to 59) but on others he's quite clearly giving an actual age (like for Prudence Trollop mentioned elsewhere at 92). All adds to the 'challenge'  ;D

Extra Adlams - we have a candidate for son Henry -

Ref HO107/1177/10 Folio 36 Page 7 Newbury, Horningsham
Henry Adlam - 20 - Stone Mason - Y
Sarah Adlam - 20 - - Y

On the same page but lower down and on her own is -
Martha Adlam - 28 - Unreadable occupation, looks like Ford or Tool!!! - Y

You didn't mention her but since she was nearbyI thought I'd better include her.

Then we have possible for son John

Ref HO107/1177/10 Folio 37 Page 8 Newbury, Horningsham
John Adlam - 30 - Ag Lab- Y
Elizabeth Adlam - 30 - - Y
Thomas Adlam - 9 - - Y
George Adlam - 8 - - Y
Ann Adlam - 6 - - Y
Mary Adlam - 4 - - Y

The other Adlams I found looked like they might be interesting so I've included them just in case -

Possible grandparents???

Ref HO107/1177/10 Folio 35 Page 5 Newbury, Horningsham
Joseph Adlam - 75 - Pauper - Y
Hannah Adlam - 75 - - Y

Then there's this interesting mix -
Ref HO107/1177/10 Folio 38 Page 10 Hitcombe Bottom, Horningsham
Martha Adlam - 55- Ind - Y
Mary Adlam - 14 - - Y
Richard Adlam - 12 - - Y
Frederick Trollope - 10 - - Y
Samuel Adlam - 15 - - Y

Wonder what relation that lot were to each other...

The final Adlam may be no connectionn but I don't want to leave them out!
Ref HO107/1177/10 Folio 39 Page 13 Over Street, Horningsham
George Adlam - 50 - Ag Lab- Y
Phoeby Adlam - 50 - - Y
Elizabeth Adlam - 28 - - Y
Thomas Adlam - 25- - Y
George Adlam - 18 - Ag Lab - Y
Henry Adlam - 15 - Ag Lab - Y
Mary Adlam - 10 - - Y
Eliza Adlam - 7- - Y

I don't think you wanted another Thomas of the same age.... wonder why he wasn't working?

I had a hunt for Harriett Marsh but couldn't find her. Doesn't mean she isn't there, given the writing quality so I'll have another look tomorrow. I found 4 Marsh families, one of which was a Harriett but she was clearly 12 years old - a little young for marriage even then? What puzzles me is that the census appears to be dated 26 June 1841, at least that's when it was signed up, so surely Thomas and Harriett would be married by then?

A few more puzzles for you ;D

Please let me know if there are any others I can look up. I've been looking a bit in surrounding villages but some villages seem to be missing, which doesn't help.

Best wishes

Angela

Hello Angela,
Thanks for all the information, wow... what a lot of Adlam's,
I had thought about the rounding of the ages, but on some occasions I think he probably does and on others he doesn't?? just to keep us on the ball  ::)
he doesn't seem to round with the under 20's though.
best wishes,
Newbie
