J. Pascoe, bookseller
« on: Thursday 11 November 21 12:01 GMT (UK) »
J. Pascoe apparently worked as bookseller at around the 1840 mark in Newton Abbot.  This is the only reference that I can find (so far).  Can anyone help pinpoint the man and his business - and even elaborate a little?

What is your interest in him?  What reference have you found?  If he is an ancestor - which of his children are you descended from?

Have you looked for him on the various censuses or looked for a death for him on freebmd?

Circa 1850 J Pascoe was located on Bridge Street, Newton Abbot. The 1861 census has a Pascoe family living on Bridge Street. Are they relatives?

ADDED: The family above is his son and family.

Many thanks to correspondents (you again, Shaun!)...I've been able to make a proper start on the Pascoe saga.

I'm not a relative...

To put the record straight: Pascoe (and many others like him) is a subject in some long-running research into the lives and activities of various printers and sellers of nineteenth century broadside ballads: a particular interest of mine connected with the mine of traditional songs and music in the UK and Ireland.

Cornwall OPC site has the folowing marriage,.
Richard Pascoe (otp) / Margery Webber (of Falmouth) 25 July 1819 at St Austell.
Could be relevant.

That baptism in 1820 looks a bit suspect. ( First of two sons with same name? Or should 1820 read 1826?)
When John Webber Pascoe died in 1911 his age was given as 85 (b c 1826)
In 1841 Richard Pascoe 50, Margery, 51, living with children, including John, 15,  (painter app) at Exeter Road, Highweek. (Parents shown as born  Devon but Cornwall in later censuses.) Daughter Selina constant presence throughout.
In subsequent censuses JWP b c 1826
