I’m still baffled as to the connection between him and Eugenie Schwartztrub. Is it possible that Pierre Joseph Schwartztrub died and Marc married his widow. Then Eugenie became his step daughter?

I found a sister of Eugénie called Julie Emilie born 30 dec 1868 in Montbeliard , married  in La Rochelle 8th sept 1919 to Michel Dominique CABRET or CALVET . She died 21 sept 1946 in ORAN (Algéria).

Her marriage certificate ( more than 100 years's ago, so you can ask for it) should tell you when her father died .

Apparently Pierre Joseph Schwartztrub was a “clerk of Holy Orders” according to Eugenie’s marriage to Robert Dibdin.

Clerck of Holy orders may refer to Rev Hautier, not PJ Schwarztrub ( probably dead ).

This is the birth certificate for Julie Émilie with a note of the marriage and death. Couldn't find an entry for the marriage in La Rochelle.

They are, if you look under greffe instead of commune records but I couldn't see the marriage there.
