What happened to Andrew & Thomas Forrest after 1851?
« on: Sunday 28 November 21 16:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I’m looking for the whereabouts of Andrew Forrest bap 1837 and his brother Thomas bap. 1839 in Glencross (Glencorse) Midlothian to William 1787-1839 and Janet Shaw c 1800 d. between 1861-1869, who married in 1824.  Other siblings are:

Christina bap 1826-1869 – Not married
John bap 1828-1873 – Married Margaret Craig
William bap 1833-? 1841c in Cauvin Hospital aged 8/1851 aged 18, 32 Greyfriars, Apprentice Bookseller?
Catherine bap 1835-1902 – Not married

1851 census (from SP) shows Andrew (13) & Thomas (12) Forrest born Glencross (Glencorse) as ‘Inmate Boys’ and ‘Receiving board & Education gratis’ at the Cauvin Hospital, Duddingston which now appears to have been converted into Sheltered housing. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Willowbrae+Rd,+Edinburgh/@55.952199,-3.1464689,17.54z/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x4887c7891f0af47b:0x915652d28cee8391!2sRegent+Rd,+Edinburgh+EH1+3DG!3b1!8m2!3d55.9536501!4d-3.1838955!3m4!1s0x4887b842c76b7cfb:0x5829d7a130945e61!8m2!3d55.9524806!4d-3.1461912

It can’t be long after the 1851c that Andrew & Thomas have to leave Cauvin, but I can’t seem to find any information on them in later census.  They are not direct ancestors, but I have an itch to find out what happened to them.  Any help would be gratefully received.

For General Info - Cauvin
There is quite a bit online about the founder Louis Cavin Jnr, Teacher of French and Farmer.  From the information online, Cauvin Hospital doesn’t appear to been just an Orphanage, but for the ‘maintenance and education of the sons of respectable teachers, Farmers, failing in business, Printers, Booksellers and the sons of industrious agricultural labourers.’

I had considered the Andrew in Liverpool and am open to exploring that further.

I had looked for deaths but couldn't find anything.  Don't know how I overlooked that one MonicaL.  I'll go and spend some credits and let you know the outcome.

Yes, unfortunately my Andrew.  Died 29th December 1856 aged 19.  Student of Divinity living at 60 Earl Gray St.  CoD Scarlet Fever.  Informant was his brother, William.  Buried at Glencorse.

Thanks for finding that for me.  So sad after losing his father at such an early age and then having the opportunity to be at Cauvin Hospital and make something of his life.

At least William was still alive in 1856.  I wonder what happened to Thomas.

Thomas looks to have married Jessie Christie on 28 November 1864 in Edinburgh. He looks to have named his first son Andrew born at the end of 1865 www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQR4-196 after his brother. At least 5 children showing for them on Family Search.

Should show in 1871 census.

Family may have gone off to the US (Massachusetts).

Marriage is confirmed as correct from SP. The rest all need confirmation!

Thanks for the new info.  I'll follow it up.  However, I never have much luck with Family Search.  I need to take a Master Class I think.

Really appreciate you taking an interest.  Kit
