Information on James A. Hamon - BD abt. 1847 - Ireland

Hello All!  I am trying to find information about my great grandfather, James Alpheus Hamon BD abt. 1847.  Some U.S. census have him as coming from Ireland in the mid 1800s, and others say he came from the Isle of Jersey. I've not found anything on him from Jersey so I am trying Ireland!  He came to the U.S. in 1849 and settled in San Francisco, where I am from.  Thank you!  Elizabeth

Perhaps he was born in one place and lived in the other.
Can you please indicate sources for each census. What is the earliest census you found him on?
Is 1847 his estimated birth year? Is that what "BD" means?
Registration of births in Ireland began 1864. Before then you're reliant on baptism registers, which, depending on place and denomination, may not exist. Do you know which religious denomination he belonged to?
What did he put as his nationality on censuses? Were parents or siblings with him on a census?  Were any of them born outside U.S. ?
Which record says he arrived in U.S. in 1849?
Did he move around U.S. or settle in San Francisco from the start?

James A. Hamon Snr. first born son (also James Alpheus Hamon and my granduncle) says on a 1920 US Census that his father was born in England. But then my grandfather says England on one census and Ireland on another.  I don't have any English DNA, but I do have 26% Irish DNA.  Not sure if that means anything.  James A. Hamon Sr's wife (my great grandmother) was definitely Irish - Delia Carr, although I don't have her parents birth records but there are numerous references to her being Irish.
