Looking for baptism / parents of Mary Read
« on: Tuesday 05 April 22 11:03 BST (UK) »
Mary Read married Joseph Broom in Christchurch on 30 Aug 1817, witnesses Charles Hiley and James Lockyer (James witnesses a lot of marriages around that time - possibly Parish Clerk)

In 1841, Mary age 40 is with husband Joseph 50 and four of their children John 15, Sophia 15, Eliza 10 and George 8. Either in same household or next door is a John Read age 68. All born in county

In 1851 Mary 56, Joseph 56, Sophia 27 and Eliza George 19. Mary born Christchurch

In 1861 Mary 65, Joseph 66, Emily (grand-daughter) 7. Again Mary born Christchurch.

Mary's death was registered Q1 in Christchurch district age 76.

So we're looking for a Mary Read baptised about 1795/6 in Christchurch, possibly with father John.

Can anyone find her please?

Not Christchurch and father not John.

Still perhaps worth investigating a Mary READ bap Holdenhurst 27 May 1798, parents Jane and Francis.

Holdenhurst is an easy stroll into Christchurch.

I've just looked through Christchurch baptisms and nothing resembling Read (large number of variations in spelling available.

I agree with Jebber - a neighbouring parish is possible.

I found that one, but I think she was the Mary Read who married James Vatter at Holdenhurst on 9 May 1816.

Thank you, although NH is some way from Christchurch, the family could have moved to CC when she was very young and she thought she was born there. Or born CC but baptised where one or both parents had their roots. I'll see if I can trace John and James now.

Hi,

I don't know if these are connected but the dates fit,

Marriage
30 Mar 1794, Christchurch
John READ
Ann KING
Witnesses:  Geo. LOCKYER, Geo. FERREY.

Death
20 Sep  1812,  Christchurch
Ann READ
Age:  43
Wife of John

I can't find any births but I wonder if they could have been baptising children in the Christchurch Congregational Church rather than Christchurch Priory church?

I have found some nfo about the church at,

https://archive-catalogue.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/search/all:records/0_50/all/score_desc/Christchurch%20Congregational%20Church

Can anyone see these records?

Regards,
Daisy
