Death Registration of a Vagrant
« on: Sunday 10 April 22 13:50 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wasn't sure where best to post this but as the last known whereabouts of the person I am looking for was Glossop I thought I'd begin here.

I am on the trail of somebody whose last known whereabouts, that I can find, was Glossop and he was reported as a tramp in the newspaper in 1875. I can find no death registration but I appreciate that not all BMD are recorded on the website.

My query is would it be somebody in the local authority who would register the death of a vagrant around 1880?

Thank you.

Amanda

He could have died and no one knew what his name was, deaths were registered with 'surname' listed as Unknown

Hi

I hadn't considered that, thank you.  :'( I should check the newspaper archives to see if unknown deaths were reported in the paper.

Thank you.

Well I never thought that people were registered as unknown.

I just looked on GRO and there really are a lot. Oddly many have an age, so how would the authorities know that.

Hi

Yes I thought the same. Maybe they didn't know surname or forename but surely not their age. Odd.

I am looking for Caleb Brotherton. Last reported as a tramp in Glossop in 1875. He was born 1819 though recorded as 1824 when he was arrested in 1852. I can find no census record after 1875 though he could be anywhere but if he had fallen on hard times I need to consider did he maybe make his back to Manchester where some siblings lived or even tried to return to Scotland where other siblings lived.

Thank you. I have tried to find him via census and death registration but no luck yet.
