Pennsylvania Thomas Henry John Emigrated circa 1902
« on: Thursday 28 April 22 15:45 BST (UK) »
Hi Thomas Henry John emigrated to Pennsylvania to look for coalmining work in 1902/3. He left behind his wife Martha Frances Fairhurst and 2 children. I am unable to trace him in the USA or maybe he didn't go, but just dissappeared. Sorry I don't know his birth and there are 100's of possible Thomas's in the records. Believe he had a sister known as '****** aunt Maggy'. They lived in Atherton Lancashire UK around 1900, can't find them in 1901 or 1911 in the uk. I know its a long shot, but has anyone any ideas please?  regards carolmc

married Sept Quarter of 1900 in Leigh, Lancashire

You probably should send for the marriage record. It would tell you Thomas'  father's name and I think his age - unless the English ones just say "of full age" like most of the Irish ones.

Then see if you can find his birth or at least find him with his parents on a census. Then you'd have something to narrow him down in the US.

If he died in the US and the state records are online, most of them are supposed to include parents' names by the time Thomas would have died. Of course if no one in the US knew him well, the parents' names might be left blank.

Did she remarry Mar Qtr 1919 in Leigh to Thomas Bowker?

Ask "Why? Did she know by then she was a widow?"

From what I see, Martha was born about 1880 in Leigh, but that doesn't help much with Thomas' age.

I think this could be him. He works in a coal mine. He is married. The Francis(sp) listed is female and married, and the right age and POB to be the Martha Frances Fairhurst noted in the birth record. They are living with his mother and his siblings.

1901 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9VC-CM3

This would be him with his family in the 1891 census. Middle name confirmed as Henry.

Martha's Birth: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2XNR-GNY

Martha with her family in 1891.

Just some follow up.

That definitely appears to be them in that 1901 census. Here is the daughter Gladys in the 1911 census with her mother Martha Francis and  a sister Nellie, they are living with Martha's mother and her siblings. It ties everything together.

This could be him immigrating in July 1903 via Canada. Age is about right and he is a miner. His destination is Pennsylvania. He does say he single?

Nanticoke, PA is in Luzerne County, which was a big coal mining area.

Maybe the passenger ship record leaving might help narrow things down whether this is him or not?

That link goes to a man headed for Youngstown, Ohio. Could you post the one for the man headed for Pennsylvania? I haven't found it yet. Thanks

So we have an approximate birth date for Thomas Henry John of Jan to Mar 1882, son of George Henry and Mary Ann Jones. - I think.
