Translation of a document written in German.
« on: Sunday 15 January 23 04:54 GMT (UK) »
I think the attachment is about a failed SOE operation in the last year of WW2. It was written by one of the men who took part in it.
Unfortunately it is not easily readable plus it is written in an old German script (I am told).
Any help would be appreciated.
AntonP.

The handwriting is not too difficult, but the quality of the scan makes it very hard to read. Can you provide a sharper image?

Zefiro, unfortunately this is the best I can do. Its a scan of a copy taken of the old original held in the UK National archives. I am not in the UK to get a better copy.

I started with the last lines, because they are a bit sharper. A few words remain blank, but I'm confident that the rest is ok. I hope others can join and decipher this.

8. An der Schweizer Grenze sind große ...sichtbare
Lampen. Diese können bei Nacht gut als Richtpunkte
genommen werden. ... der ganze Wälder meiden.
Besser ist, über die Felder zu gehen. Im Wald sind
Patrullien und oft auch Drahthinternisse. Nicht in der
Nähe einer Strasse die Grenze überschreiten.

8. At the Swiss border are big ...visible lamps.
These can be used as reference points at night.
... avoid the whole forest.
It is better to walk across the fields.
In the forest there are patrols and often wire obstacles.
Do not cross the border near a road.

Many thanks Zefiro.
Point 8 refers I should think to the final act of his escape over the Swiss border after evading Nazis. Its maybe advice for any other SOE agents who might be in a similar position.
I assume points 1 to 7 might have similar advice or just record his escape for the records. If anyone else can translate that would be greatly appreciated.

My shot at number 5. very unsure. Maybe Zefiro can take a look

Mehr Wert auf kalte Verpflegung legen. (Schokolade Bon-Bons)
da ein ??Verzehr??? der ??heißen?? oft unmöglich ist.

Put more emphasis on cold food. (chocolate bonbons)
because a consumption of hot food is often impossible.

Dave, thanks. Again sounds sensible if you are in Nazi controlled territory attempting railway sabotage!
