William Hughes
« on: Friday 17 February 23 07:34 GMT (UK) »
Hello all, I'm after some help in finding the correct William Hughes for my family tree.  He's my 3rd GGF.

Facts

William Hughes
Born 1839 in Abergele.
Widowed 13 January 1868
Arrived in Australia February 1868 on "Great Britain"
Age listed as 32 which is off by a few years but it's the only WH to match up by age
Married in Carlton, Victoria, Australia on 26 January 1880 to Mary Ann Matthews of Box Forest, Victoria
He states being in his 41st year on Marriage Certificate, she was in her 21st
They had 9 children from 1880 to 1892
He died in 1921 probably in Victoria
Ancestry lists his parents as David Hughes and Mary Williams.

I'm going round in circles, please help.

"He states being in his 41st year on Marriage Certificate, she was in her 21st"

Unusual way to see age recorded on a marriage certificate.

Can you please list all the information on the marriage certificate please.

"He died in 1921 probably in Victoria"
How are you able to know the year of his death but not the location?

His wife and children all died in Victoria so I'm assuming he did too.

Am attaching marriage certificate.

And yes, I'd also never seen someone's age listed like his.   Very unique for sure.  Would have preferred actual DOB. :)

I see from the certificate that hiss parents are listed as David Hughes and Mary Williams and his father is down as a farmer.

Have you checked the early censues with this information?

Oh no I've looked at that certificate so much and that never stood out to me.  Boy I feel stupid now lol.  I'll go back and dive in again now their names are confirmed.  If I get stuck I'll come back. Thank you.

Something seems wrong here. How long did it take to get to Australia from GB in those days?

Re age - he may have taken a few years off his age in the marriage cert  given the age difference.

When I looked earlier, I saw that you had a couple of ideas for a first  wife on your Ancestry tree (2 possible marriage dates) . I went in later and found that you seem to have added the parents' names with dates of birth of 1819 but no other info about them. Where did you get this information?

I just put those dates in hoping something might pop up.  It didn't so I'll remove it.  I think I definitely have enough info to figure this out, it'll just take awhile to connect the dots by going throa lot of records..  I think you're right on the dates between Wales and Australia too.  It's too short a time frame.
