James Ernest Daglish 1868 - ?
« on: Sunday 26 February 23 01:11 GMT (UK) »
James was born in Gateshead in 1868 ( only found a baptism record of 7 Sep 1868, no cert of birth found yet).  He later married a Henrietta Grainger in1989.  They had at least 2 children;

James Ernest 1887 (born before the marriage,  obtained from various census) died 1918 (WW1), obtained from military records.Regimental # 15181 under name of Ernest Daglish.

Henrietta 1891- ?

Because father/Son have the same names there seems to be a confusion over their deaths.  Others (in Ancestry) indicate that both died on the same day 29 Mar 1918  (unlikely). Also James senior would be 50 yrs old and on the front lines (again unlikely, I think, thogh I may be wrong here).

Can anyone help me sort this out please?

Finding James senior's death date would solve the conundrum I hope.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Richard

Thanks,

Yes the daughter Henrietta did marry a Robert Cummings in 1916 I believe.  But it is her father James  Ernest Daglish that I am trying to find a death date for. Did he die in 1918, or was it his son who died then?

WWI Prisoners of War    https://grandeguerre.icrc.org

FindMyPast has the record but if you don't have access to FindMyPast -

Pop "dalglish" (no initials) in Name, select Nationality "British Commonwealth" and Status "Military". Hit Search  and tab down to 6th entry.
If you position the cursor over the record it offers "Addnl Info about this person". This is in German but has been translated on the record you first see under PA 22161

If you want a birth cert you have to buy it.

James Ernest Dalglish, birth registered 1867 is present on the 1891 Census with Henrietta but does not appear with her on any Census after that although she continues to describe herself as "married". In 1911 she declares "married 24 years".

Using Briitishnewspaperarchives.com

Newcastle Daily Chronicle  15 May 1918 p5

Mr. end Mrs. 41. Amelia Seseef, Newcastle, here bees informed that their one, Pte. Pzneet. E, Degifal, L•inaler Itairtmeat. has been reportod mlenag ...

This is a pay site, with just enough information available free to encourage you to pay for better look.

If the DAGLISH at 41 Amelia is recorded as "son of" you might think tht he is not married.

I spotted the death notice of Margaret Daglish, 41 Amelia Street, in 1926 - aged 56 (b 1970). This is the address that appears on the prisoner of war record I posted under "Dalglish" - note the spellings. But it names his mother as "H Dalglish". Could the "H" be a typo for "M".

I have also just found a prisoner of war record for "Daglish 15181".

Will check Wivenhoe's find
