John william maw
« on: Monday 13 March 23 12:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am not able to find a birth or baptism for the above born 1910 in tollerton north yorkshire. I think this would be in easingwold, is there a problem with those records?

I also cannot find him on the 1911/21 census. I know he joined the army, lying about his age and have him going to Gibraltar. The first proper record I can find is his marriage in Lincoln to Kathleen Ada in 1939, where he put father unknown on his marriage certificate.

Thanks in advance to anybody who can shed light on this
Ruth

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
A piece in the Lincolnshire Echo mentions his marriage  in Oct 1939, Kathleens parents are mentioned but not Johns.
He is mentioned as being a serjeant in the Lincolnshire Regiment and his best man was an army friend .Sounds like he did nt possibly know his father.
He was still in the army ( WO2) in 1953 when they had a child, mention of the name Bunny, not sure if his nickname.
So it seems either he was born J W Maw but possibly a different year or born under another surname and his mother married a Maw, or just assumed his surname.
I m sure there s an answer somewhere out there, hopefully other rootschatters might have some info.
Do you know when/ where he died, that might help.Do you have his address on the marriage certificate?

Cathy :)

Hi all
Thank you for your rapid replies. Yes he was known as bunny in the family.
John maw is my friends father and have just texted her to get the correct death date. It seems he had 2 birthdates to enable him to enrol in the army earlier than he should. Also that her mum sorted out some papers before she died and destroyed them. It’s all a real puzzle

Possibly he was the illegitimate son of Hannah Maw (born Stillington circa 1892). Now where is she in the 1911 census?

John Maw returning from Gibraltar aged 20 in 1931 gives address as High Street, Stillington.
There is a tree on Ancestry that suggests John William Maw b 1912 died Derbyshire 2008 but may not be correct.

Hi
Thank you for all your help, I’ve found him with the correct birthday at St Pancras workhouse, mother Hannah and named William.
Still not found Hannah on the 1921 census or 1939 register, but will keep looking
