David Houghton - m - Harriet Gower 1846 Norwich
« on: Monday 20 March 23 04:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm trying to locate the marriage place of David Houghton to Harriet Gower in 1846.

Using the FreeBMD indexes I have them marrying in the Sept ¼ 1846 Norwich.

I have seen reference in an on-line tree quoting 27-8-1846 St.Benedicts Norwich, but going thru the original registers on F/Search for St.Benedicts I am unable to find the marriage in the original book.

Is anyone able to point me to the actual place of marriage or was it in a registry office in the parish?
If the latter is there a search facility for BMDs in Norfolk like there is in Berks BMD

Thanks in advance for any help.

Marriage locator doesn’t find it. So likely a registry office wedding.

Thank you - it's what I suspected.

Its probably a registry office located within the parish of St.Benedicts.

The children from his first marriage were all baptized at St. Benedict's.

His first marriage was at St Clement, Norwich

Norwich Mercury 14 November 1863

Same day Mr. David Houghton at Ten Bell Lane, St Swithins', confectioner aged 80 years.

This would have been the 9th of November 1863.

Also in the Norfolk News and Norfolk Chronicle

Marriage locator doesn’t find it. So likely a registry office wedding.

I have searched for quite a number of marriages using this facility. The marriages took place in known parish churches but the locator did not manage to find any of them.

Hi all,

Many thanks for all your help and tips.

Strangely, I can only find one birth/baptism of children to David & Harriet Gower in 1853 (Agnes), although two boys (John 16 & Frederick 14) show up in the 1871 census. But their place of birth is Heigham and I believe the records are no longer avaiable for that parish.

Have you followed his children, are John and Frederick actually grand children?

David 1807 married Mary Ann Smith 1827 St Benedict's,  she was buried as Marianne 3 August 1829 age 21, he then married Eliza Dowson 1831 at St Margaret's.

Robert 1809 married  Sarah Nixon 1828

John 1812 possible marriage to Maria French 1835 Lakenham St John. Witness David Houghton. This requires further research as there is another Houghton family the area.

William 1814 possible marriage to Joanna Shaw Cornish 1836 Lakenham, 2nd Maria Trott

Caroline 1817 married Elijah Gray 1835 St Margaret's

Rebecca 1820 married William Drury 1840 at All Saints, 2nd John Sapey 1867 at St Peter Mancroft

Henry 1825 (with David 55 a Baker 1841 census) St Giles. Henry was 17 a weaver.
(Sister Caroline Gray is next door)
