COX family in London 1881 Census
« on: Saturday 15 April 23 16:16 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have been boggling my brain trying to find my COX family in the 1881 Census and was hoping some fresh eyes, and more expertise than I have, might help, please!  :)

I have them in the 1871 census at 20 Compton Street, St James, Clerkenwell
John Cox 36 Fire wood cutter born St Lukes
Sarah Cox 30 St Lukes
Ann Cox 8 St Lukes
Jane Cox 6 St Lukes
John Cox 4 St Lukes
Thomas Cox 2 Cripplegate
Joseph D Cox 1m Clerkenwell

I have them in the 1891 census at 165 Skidmore Street, Mile End Old Town
John Cox 54 Fire Wood Cutter St Lukes, London
Sarah Cox 51 St Lukes, London
John Cox 24 Oilman St Lukes, London
Jane Cox 26 Tailoress Cripplegate, London
Martha Cox 18 Tailoress St Lukes, London
Fredk Cox 16 Wood Cutter Dalston, London
Robert Cox 13 Scholar Dalston, London
Arthur Cox 4 Stepney, London

I have tried all sorts of things to try and find even just one of them in the 1881 census but have failed miserably. I checked on Findmypast and it seemed to imply there was nothing major missing from the 1881 census but if anyone knows better, please do say..

I wondered if they might be in a workhouse or somewhere only under initials perhaps but wouldn't know where to start with that.

Robert was the last child to be born before 1881 and he was born in Dalston, apparently (Shoreditch Reg District on GRO). I don't have his Birth Cert but will get it if need be. I cannot find his baptism, or his brother Frederick's - also born Dalston.

I am having a tough time tracing the children Ann Cox and Thomas Cox after 1871 so confirmation of their 1881 whereabouts would be very useful.

Any help would be gratefully received - many thanks.

Have you checked to see if they passed away before the 1881 census?

Have the Cox family been found in 1861? Bits of it are missing, they are not at 3 Great Arthur Street.

Indeed, but at least we know where they lived for about four years a little while before then!
Not really sure what happened to the first two children, Edmund and Sarah Ann.
Thomas might have died in 1873
March 1873 Holborn 1b 422
Cox, Thomas

Hi everyone, I have just seen all these replies - thank you.

I will reply properly in the morning as I am just off to bed - I have the delightful Covid and seem to be very tired all the time at the moment!

Briefly - I have burials for Edmund and Sarah (children) - I will look up the details and post here tomorrow.

I have attempted to look for deaths of Thomas and Ann prior to 1881 but the names are VERY common - I must try harder :)  I have been trying to spend a bit of time on it today and found the 15 Clarence Terrace address but, as you have pointed out, they were not there in 1881.

I have them in 1861 census - I will add the details tomorrow.

I will see what I can find in terms of burials for the Thomas Cox died age 4 - that might be promising. They seemed to move around quite a bit and I find it hard to keep focused on all the different London Districts! Lots and lots of map referencing as I go.

Thank you all again, sorry that I am now popping off!
