The MOOREs of Tettenhall Staffs
« on: Friday 05 May 23 04:30 BST (UK) »
Hi

Has anyone researched the MOOREs of Tettenhall during the mid-1700s and earlier? My own is rather stuck on the 'Hugh Moore line', the Hugh Moore who was 107 years when he died in 1839!

There seem to be other unrelated Moores over time living in and around Tettenhall. I call them the 'Richard Moore line' and the 'Joseph Moore line'. Just speculating but guessing that there has to be a common link to join them if the available records just went back far enough!

So far I have Richard Moore who married Sarah Onyons in 1721 and who had a son Richard, possibly the one who first married Katherine Gnosall (1750) at Wolverhampton and then Martha Lees at Tettenhall in 1757. Junior may have had a connection to WOOLRIDGE of Brewood.

Then there is a Hugh Moore who married Sarah Taylor in 1710 and had a son Hugh jnr in 1722 but who surely could not be the the first Hugh Moore I mentioned with a calculated birth year of around 1732. Because of the continuance of the Hugh first name I'm inclined to think there's a missing generation somewhere but guesswork that it's even the same line. There is an unmatched Hugh Moore who died in 1791.

Next, the first Joseph appears as father in a number of baptisms with wife Mary between 1778 and 1792. His son Joseph and daughter Hannah both marry into different generations of the 'Hugh line'.

If anyone has any info I'd love to hear from you.

I note the GRO death and the burial of a Hugh on freereg; the later has no age recorded.
The children of Hugh & Sarah below would seem to indicate to me that the age at death of Hugh junior in 1839 may be the error, rather than a missing generation. The only way to be sure is to get the death registration.

Tettenhall: St Michael and All Angels: Other Transcript

Hugh MORE   Baptism   22 Jul 1714   Burial 3 Dec 1721
Job MOORE   Baptism   14 Feb 1716/17
Mary MOORE   Baptism   11 Feb 1719/20
Richard MOORE   Baptism   22 Feb 1721/22
Hugh MOORE   Baptism   09 Dec 1722
Sarah MOORE   Baptism   13 Mar 1724/25   Burial 27 Aug 1727
Hannah Moor         Burial 2 Oct 1729

No age on burials, freereg

Sarah MOORE   widow Burial   26 May 1767

So likely burial of Hugh senior.
Hugh MOORE   Burial   15 Jun 1745

So may be the burial of Hugh junior born 1722, is more realistic?

Hugh MOORE   Burial   10 Mar 1791

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Hello
I'm with you .Hugh has to fit in somewhere. The Death registration does give 107 years but it may be a bit out.
If we look at the Will for Hugh who died 1745 (it says of Penn but it is him).
We have his beloved wife Sarah who gets cattle, chattels and household stock for life or until her remarriage plus the interest on £40.
Son Paul gets best horse or mare plus 1 shilling
Daughter Mary Shirt gets to pick her best cow
Hugh gets the £40 after Sarah's death.
Paul and Mary get the cattle and stock after Sarah's death.
Executors Paul Moor and Joseph Skirt
made 14th March 1739.

Hannah bapt 14.10.1710 Codsall d of Hugh and Sarah
Job's baptism gives them as of Compton in 1716/7

Mary married Joseph Skirt 13.6.1737 at Tettenhall
Hugh born 1722 is probably the one who dies 1791

We can assume Paul is older than Hugh who was born in 1722 ,so he marries Margaret Tonks 24 Dec 1742 age 30 ish probably born around 1712 although I can't see a baptism
Paul moves to Wednesfield but is buried back at Tettenhall Mar 1777.
Children I can see -Sarah at Tettenhall 18.11.1743
Thomas 29 May 1749 at Wolverhampton of Wednesfield Died 22.6.1751
Joseph 14 Jan 1752 Bushbury married Kingswinford Mary Beckett widow 14 Sep 1780         farmer of Tettenhall age 30.by licence.
Thomas 11 June 1754 at Bushbury Buried 16.7.1758

So plenty of room for a son Hugh b c 1745 and therefore 23 when he marries Ann Parkes and 94 when he dies.

Does that sound plausible?

ps I'm guessing Hugh senior and Richard are either brothers or uncle and nephew with a connection to Edward and Mary Moore of Trysull -children 1670-1687

Hi
I realised last night that Wolverhampton and Tettenhall are Peculiars and their Wills be on different lists to the normal Bishop of Lichfield
There is a Admin
Paul Moore pig jobber Wednesfield 1779 which looks like your man.
https://staffsnameindexes.org.uk/default.aspx?RecordID=117459&Index=C&LastName=moore&Place=&YearFrom=1600&YearTo=1790&Part=0&County=0&Gender=0&Occupation=&PageIndex=18

It's not on FindMyPast so you'd have to buy a copy but it might give a son Hugh doing the Inventary or claiming the estate  which would connect everything up.

There are also a couple of apprentices in the 1700s
Jane Hilldick to Richard Moore of Barnhurst 1751
Elizabeth Bradshaw 8 yrs until 21 1767 to Hugh Moors Tettenhall  yeoman of Compton
Elizabeth Hill 1773 to Hugh Moor of Wergs Tettenhall
Elizabeth LLewallen  to Josh of Diptons 1795

Hugh Moor age 10 26 May  1820 to Joseph Moor of Shifnal until 21 years
Thomas Moore 10 husbandry to Richard Evans of Wolverhampton 24 May 1820
Richard Moore 1798 to Edward Badger
Richard Moore of Wednesfield /Tettenhall to Peers 1815
