George SEYMOUR b about 1831 somewhere, died Nelson NZ 1860

I am helping a friend.

1 April 1849 a George SEYMOUR age 18, a labourer, Native place & County, Marylebone, Middlesex arrived Australia on the Lord George Bentinck

A different list has him as one of 14 boys from the London Ragged Schools

to be employed by a Mr Neeve? (not sure of the name) of Melbourne.

I would like somehow to be able to either rule him in or out as the G. Seymour who arrived Nelson, New Zealand, September 1854

I THINK that one (the 1854 George) is the one who married Elizabeth McGee in 1856 and died in Nelson in 1860, age 29

but how to prove it, and if it is him, how can we trace him further back.
(We have his NZ descendants information - I am waiting exact details from the children’s birth certificates but due to the early dates I doubt they contain anything of import)

I have asked for Charles Alexander’s marriage certificate’s information

Searching is not helped by the fact there is a ship the Sir George Seymour, and a Ship’s captain also George Seymour!

Exactly I am fully aware, and have been asked to see if I can help.
I don't believe he was George William SEYMOUR.

that is family tradition which I suspect started when someone found a George William SEYMOUR arriving NZ on The Cresswell. But I think (not been able to prove for sure so far) that that man was a solicitor who died in Wanganui in 1883

but the man we seek's  marriage, births of all children and his death as well as electoral rolls, jury service and land-grant notice all just have him as G. no W.

This is a link to the probate record for George Seymour who died Nelson Oct 1860. He gives his occupation as publican and his wife as Elizabeth. There is also a sworn affadafit by George McGee stating he knew George Seymour. He may be Elizabeth's father.

This may or may not be the George you are seeking. Perhaps its possible to find more about him and when he became a publican in Nelson

Thank you, yes, that is the George we are trying to figure out.
He married & died here too soon to have anything useful on a marriage or death registration, other than length of time in NZ, which fits well with that 1854 arrival.

But who he was before that is the mystery.

He may well be the George Seymour who came from the London Ragged school and was indented to Mr Neeve of Melbourne in 1849 for 12 months, then sailed to NZ. A labourer to a publican in about 5 yrs is quite a big step.
There is a Mathew Neave (sic) (on the electoral roll 1848-49) living in Melbourne (no others in Melbourne) and searching Trove shows him as a publican at the Royal Albert Hotel, Swanston St, Melbourne CBD. Coincidence or useful fact?
In 1849 Neave purchases 96 acres in the Prahran which is now inner Melbourne, so perhaps he needed some cheap labour?

Thank you for finding a Mr Neave Shume. I hadn’t managed that .
Certainly helps to build a circumstantial case if nothing else.
I notice he took 2 of the Ragged Boys. The other being Francis Scott, a Printers (?) Boy.
