Placename help - Flatfield
« on: Thursday 15 June 23 11:50 BST (UK) »
A marriage in Australia 1866 for a Thomas Allen has him as a son of Mr John Allen formerly of Flatfield, Co Tyrone.

Any local historians know of this place - the Allens resided in Kilskeery parish before emigrating in 1857 to Australia.

Could Flatfield be in Australia.
This seems to imply that - scroll down to Southern Argus notice

I think it is the same death notice.

That's not the way I read the death notice in reply #1. It says John Allen died at Flatfield near Middleton but was formerly of County Tyrone which implies Flatfield, and Middleton, likely in South Australia.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I did find a Flatfield in Ireland but it's between Lisburn & Moira so not in County Tyrone.

I also think it looks like Flatfield was in Australia.

South Australia register 1 Aug 1866
Married on 27 July at the Bible Christian chapel by Licence by Rev J Rock, Thomas the eldest son of Mr John Allen formerly of Flatfield, Co. Tyrone Ireland to Blanche youngest dau of the late Mr James Cock of Strathboylan.

It seems that John Allen named his property in South Australia Flatfield in respect of his homeplace - it is possible that it is a sub-division of a townland. The Allens resided at Glasmullagh in Kilskeery.

I did locate a Flatfield near Ballinamallard, Co Fermanagh, which might be significant.

In old O.S. maps there looks to be a local placename 'Flat Field' about 300 yards from the intersection of the A32 Mossfield Road and Drumbulcan Road in the southwest of the townland of Sidaire in Magheracross C.P., there are just a couple of modern bungalows in that vicinity today (incidentally, the O.S. Memoirs say that Magheracross C.P. had a small detached portion in Kilskeery C.P.)

Griffith's Valuation shows a John Allen leasing a house and just over 5 acres in Sidaire (print date 1862), but this is spread across three properties about half a mile further up the Drumbulcan Road.  I suppose he could conceivably be related in some way.
