James Mooney "Dead End"
« on: Monday 24 July 23 09:41 BST (UK) »
Hello, i would be grateful if anyone could help me out with finding my great granduncle James Mooney.

He seems to disappear from the records and i suspect, having run out of options that he might have died in WW1.

Alas, Scotland's People lists his possible death "Service return" and no further info.

His basics:
He is the 2nd James Mooney to father: Hugh Mooney, District Waterman and Mary Mooney Nee. McIvor.

DOB: 26 Jul 1897 in Maryhill, Lanarkshire, Scotland

His home is quite obvious and helped track down some of his other siblings as it was Waterworks Cottage, Lambhill.

The only time i can possibly find him coming up is:
James Mooney
Rank                Pte
Birth Place          Maryhill Lanarkshire
Death Date   26 Sep 1915
Death Place   France and Flanders
Cause of Death   Killed in Action
Service Number   S/9983
War                   WW1
Military Unit   Gordon Highlanders, 9th Bn
Regiment           The Gordon Highlanders

In the known family history, no one has mentioned his possible death in WW1. Their does not appear to any photos of him as an older adult which suggest maybe he did die or ended up off the beaten path somewhere.

His brother, William, went to NZ with his sister Brida in 1921. Neither stayed, later William/WM/Willie ends up in San Francisco and i cant find more on him.

Brida went to Canada after NZ, and then back to Scotland and ended up in Essex, England.

Any other info required let me know.

Always grateful.
Hugh

Using Commonwealth War Graves Commission site -

MOONEY James  #12045      died 25 September 1915    Age 17 years old
Age 17 years old

Cameronians 9th Bn   Son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Mooney, of 5, Turner St., Townhead, Glasgow.

Maybe not him.   I see James MOONEY  # S/9983   but no further information.

Hi Wivenhoe, thanks for that. I will look a bit more, i saw one separate listing for S/9983 but no further info. I am not really up on military history stuff so i don't know if that number is his personal identify or if there is another number,

This may be him:

He appears on the CWGC website with the same service number but has no known grave and so is commemorated on the Loos Memorial. No next of kin details are given.

Thanks Imber.

Its possible that its not my James, i just cant seem to find him anywhere else! Reducing everything down to the basics, how many Maryhill James Mooneys were there and where did they end up, leaving me with this one.

I remember with other relatives there being a two or three page card which stated "mothers name", "next of kin", "Pension to be paid to" etc.

None of this seems to be findable for this James Mooney unless its on a private site somewhere?

Do you have a subscription for Ancestry.co.uk by any chance?
There are records e.g. pension record on there.

I have let my subscription lapse so unfortunately I cannot do a search for you. Perhaps someone else on here may be able to help.

You could also put a post on the WW1 board on here. Some amazing experts there.

Good luck

From Registers of Soldiers' Effects :

James MOONEY Private S/9983 9th Battalion Gordon Highlanders . His beneficiary is given as his widow Elizabeth and mentions  children but no names are given.
Ancestry has transcribed the service number as 3/9983.

Found a Pension card which lists the following
Wife Elizabeth b 26 May 1884
Daughter Jane b 1Apr 1903
Son Henry 13 November 1908
Son James 16 Jun 1910
Daughter Elizabeth 19 Oct 1911
None of the above would fit your James MOONEY so I think you can safely rule S/9983 out.

Thank you!! So grateful, I could not find pension card. Back to searching for my James Mooney somewhere else.

Does anyone have any idea what or where James Mooney ended up?
