MyHeritage PhotoDater
« on: Monday 14 August 23 14:32 BST (UK) »
I've just had an e-mail from My Heritage about the introduction of PhotoDater, an AI based app. It  suggests that dating of old photos can be done by comparison with existing dated pics.

Today we’re excited to announce the release of PhotoDater™, a groundbreaking, free new feature that estimates the year a photo was taken, using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

PhotoDater™ is one-of-a-kind: MyHeritage is the only genealogy service that offers date estimation for historical photos. Using powerful technology developed by our AI team, PhotoDater™ gives its best guess when a photo was taken. This can help you unlock further clues about who appears in the photo and the event at which it was taken, to solve mysteries in your genealogy research. PhotoDater™ is completely free!

I've not investigated it but though it would make an interesting discussion point:

It would be interesting to put up some photos, old and modern, that you know exactly when they were taken to see how close the PhotoDater is.

Just tried it, didn't have any option for the dater as such, but when i opened a photo from an album in My Photos it ran and gave an estimate. Tried a couple of known date photos and it's pretty close. One taken in 1949 dated 1948

Mmmm! Interesting. Soon, with AI taking over photo restoration and now this taking over dating, I think Gadget, Jim and I will soon have to look for another hobby  :-\ ;D

I've just tried it on a photo I asked about back in April (longish thread, no clear consensus):

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=871853.0

Estimates here varied from 1880s (lateish) to mid-1890s. MH has put it at 1895 +/-6 years, with 83% confidence level.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Interesting stuff with a lot of potential.

It's absolutely way off on some of mine though. Dating photos from the 50s at 1915!
