Elizabeth Shanahan/Margaret Monaghan - 1837
« on: Saturday 26 August 23 16:07 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find further information on the above mentioned lady.

I know that in 1858 she marries Pte William Sandles in Templemore, Ireland. She is single and her father on the certificate is Richard Shanahan.

She spends 9 years in Canada whilst her husband is in the Royal Canadian Rifles. In 1567 they return to his home town of Lewes in Sussex. Subsequent Census Returns show that she was born in Sydney, Australia.

Nothing odd there but on the baptism record of her son, Canada, it says that she was Margaret Monaghan. She also uses the name Margaret on the 1871 Census but reverts to Eliza/Elizabeth on ones after this.

I'm wondering if she was perhaps born Margaret Mongahan but was then adopted by Richard and his wife?

I'm also intrigued to find out how she ended up in Ireland to meet William. He was in the 39th Foot so am assuming they were in Ireland on a posting.

Any help in adding documents to this would be gratefully appreciated. I've searched FindMyPast and don't have worldwide Ancestry so its proving a little tricky.

Thank you

Shanahan and Monaghan are similar sounding names so could just be a mistake when recording one or other

Is there any occupation listed for her father Richard?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

No its definitely not a mistake as you can see it clearly written in the original document of their son's baptism.

It doesnt give an occupation for Richard.

No only a baptism entry for Henry Charles, who is my husband's 2x great grandfather.
He was baptised 7 June 1859 at St Patrick, Canada Baptism Church, Quebec. On there it states "son of the lawful marriage of William Sandals, PTE in the Canadian Rifles and Elizabeth Shanahan, spinster - was Margaret Monaghan" He was born 10 May 1859.

The occupation of Eliza Shanahan's father Richard was recorded as 'Soldier' in the 1858 civil marriage registration:
