John Brewster frm Scotland
« on: Wednesday 20 September 23 15:53 BST (UK) »
My ancestor, John Brewster, was a private in The 10th Royal Hussars. He is shown in the regt's Muster Book in 1815, when they were stationed in Brighton. He married Charlotte Sherley on April 15th, 1816 at St Nicholas Parish Church in Brighton.
The 1841 census shows his birthplace as Scotland, but not where.
The Muster Book is on the National Arcives website. They have others but they are not digitized.
I can't move on until I find his birtplace.
Can anyone help please?

Welcome to rootschat, RodBrewster.

Is this the 1841
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/8978/images/MDXHO107_705_707-0306?pId=7812120
if so, do you believe Caroline, age 80, is his Mother?

Added : I read the age as 80, others as 30, the number does not look like 8 or 3 in comparison to others on the page.

On the East Sussex marriage record it says he is of Preston, Sussex.  Very few others have their address recorded, do you think it is just a temporary address?

Welcome from me too  :)

On the official pay to view site, www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, there is only one John Brewster birth entry showing in a suitable time frame

John Brewster
Father William (no mother's name given)
Birth date  30/08/1797
Ref 338 10 / 149
Location Cargill, Perthshire

As I am sure you have found, Brewster is not a common surname in Scotland.

There are several Browsters, Breusters, Brousters etc born - though not with mother Caroline.

What are the names of all the children - just in case there might be a naming pattern.

John Brewster married Charlotte Sherley 1816 Brighton (he signs his name)
Looks as if first 2 children born in Brighton – named after his parents?
•   William 1819 Brighton - Jew Street (father is a shoemaker)
•   Caroline 1821 Brighton - Jew Street (father is a shoemaker) - She marries Joseph Atkins 1844 in Middlesex, remarried in 1866 to William Beard
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Hello,
Thanks for your replies. The John Brewster from Cargill never left Scotland. My ancestor left Scotland and joined the army, married and never returned. He and his family lived in the East End of London where he died. When he was a private in the 10th Hussars he was stationed at Preston Barracks on the outskirts of Brighton. He and wife Charlotte had two children there. His other children were born in Middlesex.

I think the age is 20, and it is the daughter Caroline born in Brighton, who married in 1844.

I could find no sign of a death of a Caroline Brewster over 80 yrs in the 1841 to 1851 period in Shoreditch area.
