Sir William Winde architect B1642
« on: Thursday 02 November 23 14:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks.
This is really wayyyy out there. This chap, Sir William Winde was born in about 1642, died 1722, in Bergen-Op-Zoom, Netherlands to a royalist English couple (father Henry Winde D 1658). He was a "reknown" architect to the rich of the time, building many fine houses in England after starting his life as a soldier. Partly because of his colourful life and at least a surname connection to my lineage, I am looking for any further info. I do not think he is connected to me, but I am trying to account for as many Wind/s as I can in that timeframe, a big ask I know. I understand he married a Magdeline Bridgeman. Did he have children? Were there any siblings?
Thanks for ANY thoughts or inputs on what may well be a rabbit hole.

Do you mean he was born in the  Netherlands or he that died there.
Have you searched for a will.

According to a reference I found, he was born in the Netherlands.
EDIT . there are references that he was born c1642, but started a military career in the late 1650s, that doesnt quite make sense (only 17 yo but maybe depending on family tradition etc so maybe born mid late 1630 to early 1640s).......

The parents were apparently English but supported the royalist movements of the time.

He married Magalen 1677 in London, just found the transcript
EDIT - fascinating. His grandfather and father were royalists loyal to Charles 1 and lost their lands and ere exiled to Netherlands. William later returned to serve Elizabeth of Bohemia and the Craven family.

Ancestry

There are about 100  Winde  and vague varients on here , some from the 16th c.

Can't see your William Winde

Definitely had at least one son:

"In his son's sale of drawings and prints in 1741 were several of his father's designs ... they were dated from 1663 to 1695."

"The works of Horatio Walpole, Earl of Orford. In five volumes" Volume 3 page 345, by Horace WALPOLE, published 1798.

Hi garstonite and Maddy. Thank you so much for these details. This makes it easier to at least focus my attention in the right area. Great to know he had a son. Thank you so much.

Hey,

I'd love to know where you got to on William Winde. I have a possible link that I'd like to pursue.

- My 6x great grandmother was one Alice Winde, spelled the same.
- She was born four years after William married Magdeline Bridgeman
- Alice was married in the same church that he was eventually buried in.
- The name with the spelling is rare - I believe pronounced to rhyme with mind.

Thanks.
