Renton, William & Eliza
« on: Saturday 25 November 23 02:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone may be able to help trace William and Eliza Renton née Marshall, who arrived in Victoria from Scotland, 23 October 1852 aboard the “FLORA”. I can find William with Agnes and James if I have the correct ship. On Wiliiam’s headstone in Geelong his death is listed as 1873 and memorial to his first wife Eliza who died Ballarat 1852 aged 38. William remarried in 1855 to Hannah Sinclair. I don’t know what happened to Eliza and haven’t found any records for her. Any help would be appreciated
Regards
Craig

Hi,
Well I am a little muddled by your request.

Per Flora Oct 1852 I see  RENTON William aged 42, Martha aged 47, James aged 8 and Agnes aged 10 ticketed together. They were going to Mr BINGLEY at Boorabool. ( a well to do grazier)

Ticketed seperately 2 daughters, Elizabeth aged 15  and Margaret aged 17
Who are you looking for?
Sue

ADDING
No-one of the surname RENTON died on board Flora on that voyage

The 1855 marriage certificate to Hannah SINCLAIR shows that his wife Eliza (Marshall) RENTON died 24 August, 1844  :-\

On the shipping record Flora October 1852, against the entry for the young women Elizabeth and Margaret RENTON,who are domestic servants, states-

"Parents on board."

I wonder who Martha was. ??
i wonder if the date of deceased wife should be 1854, not 1844. ??

I'm trying to pin Martha as a sister to William, but I am not skilled with Scottish records.

She is his senior by a few years. Coming to assist with the younger children??   ::)

Could be an error Neale as the headstone at Geelong Eastern Cemetery says she died at Ballarat 1852 age 38yrs  ???

Okay, lots of replies which is great, the Martha has me baffled as well because I can’t find a sister named Martha unless she is a cousin. William’s headstone would have been placed sometime after his death , obviously, and whoever did may have got Eliza’s death incorrect which would explain 1844, but it seems she was still alive in 1851 census. The only conclusion is the headstone is wrong. More searching for Martha is required.
