William S Kennaird
« on: Friday 01 December 23 19:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could help me find William Stephen Kennaird (1877-1927) in the 1891 census. I have him on all other censuses. In 1891 his mum - Frances Kennaird and siblings Mary and Henry were living at 6 Dacre Street in Lee. I know that he joined the royal marines in 1892 (lied about being 18), but was then discharged for some reason two years later, wondered if this could be why he isn't on the census, even though he joined after 1891? Also, if anyone happens to find anything else about him serving in the royal marines/army that would be great too!
Thanks for any help!  :)

Think you have the wrong family.  1881 for Dacre St is William b Lee Kent.  Mother Elizabeth

William Stephen's parents were Stephen & Emma

I haven’t found him in the census but in July 1895 he enlisted in the Dragoons, his service was short, a few days in he was awaiting trial having been discharged with ignominy from the Marines. He was imprisoned for 84 days and discharged with ignominy on the 14 August  1895, all service counting towards pension was forfeited.

Strange 1891 entry.  William Kennaird 14 b Oban Argyll - in a boys reformatory in Wandsworth

Checked SP - no birth 1875-1879

Thank you so much Jebber! Loads of helpful information - didn't know any of it  :)

I saw that entry Carole and discounted it because of the birth in Scotland, is it possible that they wrote down the wrong birth place? It would make sense for him to be in a boys reformatory aswell...

Given his background it seemed a likely place for him to be but I just thought it was odd given there is no birth on SP & no Scottish or English 1881 entry

There is an 1881 entry mistranscribed on Ancestry aged 3 - but he was Kennedy & is with parents in 1891
