I am also missing the 1901 census for Lewis I assume he was still in England because he married his wife in England in 1902.
I meant to add earlier that his Masonic membership states date of initiation as 3 Dec 1901 and passing - 4 Feb 1902, raising - 4 Mar 1902. His address at the time was 121 Hampton Rd, Redland; occupation - mariner.
Not sure about his employment at Cammell Laird shipbuilders. In the 1891 census he is descrived as a 19 year old "seaman". In 1893 he is "2nd mate", 1895 - "1st mate" and 1902 - "master".
Have just realised, if you have access to Ancestry and look at the certificates for these, click to next page(s) and you find which ships he was on and when. eg for the 1901 census he would have been on the
Guarany as 1st Mate.
https://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?196166There is a record of him as apprentice indentured in Merchant Navy, aged 14 at Avonmouth (30 Sept 1886) for 4 years, to R, MILBURN.
So, as far as I can see, he was on boats from the age of 14.
