The Infirmary, Hame Road, Farnham
« on: Saturday 27 January 24 11:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi, my first psting on Roots, apologise if I have posted in wrong place happy to be advised, My Wife's DNA has resulted in being mainly Irish (Her Father being Irish) and Scandanavian (My Wifes Mother and her family, are all from Tadley near Basingstoke established for many years in that area her Grandmother being the village Midwife, no Scandanavian connections.

On Checking my Mother In law's birth certificate she was born in 1929 at The infirmary 493 Hale Road, Farnham, she had no connection with the area, I can only think that her Mother 'Adopted' a child from the infirmary, we are aware that another of her daughters was 'Adopted' locally, would there be anyway to find out any links for this query? Are there any Scandanavian connections to Farnham, appreciate any help or advice thank you Dennis

What else does the birth certificate say? What was the father's occupation? What was their home address?

The 1921 census entry for Infirmary, Hale Road, Farnham points to this being the workhouse.

This link will show you the site on the 1909 OS map:

it is now Farnham Hospital.

I have family born in the 1920's and 1930's who were born all over the place, no where near where they were from and no connection. Upon asking in the family, it turned out that work was so scarce that people would travel hundreds of miles upon a whisper of a prospect just for the sake of a chance of getting a job and hopefully enough to feed the family for a while.

Whenever I see Farnham registration district mentioned, I think of possible army connections. Aldershot was in that RD until 1932.

I agree about the travelling regarding looking for work and Sevice connections, but My Wife's Gran was a full time village midwife and her husband fully employed, can only think they went to the infirmary to 'Adopt a baby' interesting to know if such things happened Wifes family have no connection to Farnham,  I wonder how she heard that there was a baby? How did they get there, they did not drive, its about 25 miles apart, some great replies really intetresting
