James O'Hara, Tinsmith
« on: Tuesday 06 February 24 21:30 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the death details for my 3rd great-grandfather James O'Hara.

He was christened in August 1858 in St Malachy's Church, Belfast, Ireland and his parents were Alice Quin and Michael O'Hara.

In the 1871 Census, his name is listed as James O'Heir living in Calton, Glasgow and he was 12 years old

James O'Hara, a Tinsmith, married Mary McDonald in Camlachie on 20th August 1880.

In the 1881 Census, Mary lived with her parents in Camlachie and listed her name as Mary McDonald.
I believe James O'Hara was living in St Nicholas, Aberdeen and had his name listed as James O'Harry, 23 years old, Tinsmith. Although the James in this census record was supposedly born in Aberdeen, there is no record of a James O'H* born in Aberdeen between 1855 and 1861.

Mary McDonald had my 2nd great-grandfather in 1893. His parentage was listed as 'Mary Adams McDonald, Shawl Fringer, widow of James O'Hara, Tinsmith (journeyman) who died in Glasgow in September 1888.

However, when Mary McDonald applied for Poor Relief in 1900 this was recorded about James O'Hara.
'Family by 1st Husband James O'Hara, Born Bruickfield, Calton died 13 years ago in America.
He was very ill when he went there.
William, 14, Born 2nd Jan 1887 at 44 George Street Glasgow, Laundry worker @ 6/- per week.
Daniel McDonald (illegitamate), 7, born 9 Jan 1893 at 120 Saltmarket.'

James O'Hara and Mary McDonald had a child that died on 10 October 1887 called Jessie O'Hara who died in 44 George Street, Glasgow. James O'Hara, Tinsmith, is listed as her father and still alive.

I have looked for death records but I haven't found anything that relates to him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 1901 family above are on the 1891 census - James is a clothier not a tinsmith

Also have a 6yr old daughter Rose Ann

Don't think it's the family being researched

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Have you viewed the 1880 marriage to confirm his parents names?

What were their addresses at the time of the marriage?

Gets confusing with two threads running at the same time  ::) Link to other post www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=880143.0

You mentioned in the other thread:

Her surviving children in 1891 would be:

William O'Hara born 2nd January 1887 in Blackfriars
Joseph Roger (illegitimate) born 9 December 1889 in Blackfriars.

Her husband James O'Hara allegedly died in 1888 and she then had her son Joseph Roger with a man called John Roger, Iron Foundry Labourer. Mary McDonald was a Shawl Fringer when her son Joseph was born. Joseph was born at 118 George Street

You have also mentioned that William lived to adulthood. Did Joseph?

Sorry for the confusion. I had made the two threads to find out two different things and the family seemed to go in two different directions around 1888.

Joseph didn't make it to adulthood but he made it to 8 years old. He died on 15th April 1898 in the Royal Infirmary, Dennistoun with his usual residence being 34 Kent Street, Calton. He died of an accidental fractured skull. His informant was his father John Roger.
