Is the Reverend David Black buried in Ardrossan?

David Black was born in Dykehead, New Monkland in 1808. He was Free Kirk minister of Tillicoultry from 1843 to 1874, and eventually retired to Ardrossan, where he died on 14 June 1878. His wife Jean Thomson died in 1904 and his daughters Jean in 1913, Agnes in 1916, and Catherine in 1932, all in Ardrossan.

I would be interested in knowing whether there is a gravestone and if so whether or not it commemorates any of the rest of his family.

A MEMORIAL WINDOW UNVEILED

A window in memory of the mother and sisters of Mr. M. T. Black, Harrogate, has been unveiled and dedicated in St. John’s, Ardrossan.

The donor is Mr. M. T. Black, son of the Rev. David Black, former minister of Tillicoultry. Those commemorated by the window were for many years members of St. John’s Church, Ardrossan.

The window, entitled “Jesus in the House of Martha and Mary,” has been designed and executed by Mr. Walter J. R. Cook, D.A. (Edinburgh), who recently was commissioned to supply the Haig windows in the Scots Kirk, Aldershot. It was dedicated by the Rev. Dr. Adamson, minister of St. John’s.

There are a few death notices but none give funeral or burial information that I've come across - sorry.

BLACK - At Auchendhu, Ardrossan, on the 19th
January, Jean Thomson, widow of the Rev.
David Black. Funeral Cortege leaves the
house at 2.45 p.m. to-day (Friday). Friends
kindly accept this intimation.

So if she was buried in Ardrossan, presumably her husband was too.

The Rev David and his wife Jean Thomson had five daughters and four sons. Only one son married (at the age of 52), and he had one son and a daughter who died young. I'm still looking into the son, to see if he was married twice. If he wasn't, then I reckon the family has died out.

Three of the sons were in business together in Bradford as woolcombers. The fourth one went to New Zealand, and his mother's will makes an interesting and detailed provision for him which prevents him getting his hands on the capital of her legacy unless he outlives all his siblings, which didn't happen.

Armed with the information on the gravestone (thank you, GR2), I now have either death certificates or entries from the New Zealand and English deaths indexes, most of them backed up by probate or newspaper reports or burial records.
