General help needed - can't find death registry entry
« on: Monday 13 May 24 16:24 BST (UK) »
I've been successful using irishgenealogy.ie to find birth, marriage and death records of my ancestors but I can't find any record of a particular Grandmother. She was absent on the 1901 Census, while her husband was 'Married' and absent on the 1911 Census when husband was Widower. Both at the same Belfast address.

I've searched through all of the likely entries in the Civil Records of the above site. None match, for various reasons (age, address, husbands name etc).

Is there anywhere else I could look?

I found one of my other ancestors was missing from a particular Census and it turned out he was in hospital at the time and died there later. (I did identify him on  irishgenealogy.ie once I realised that 51 Lisburn Road was a hospital back in the day - now the City Hospital). No such luck with my current search.

Any thoughts welcome.

Thank you Softly. I do realise that help is always readily given on this site but I'm really asking for search technique and search site help.

If I've carefully checked every 'hit' on irishgenialogy.ie and can't find a match, surely nobody else is going to either?

Unless there are other sites to check?

Thanks again.

On the Census
First check the writing on the Census form, did a family member fill it in or the enumerator, one of mine is marked as a widower, a family member did fill in the form but left blanks so the enumerator filled in the blanks, the wife in this case was at her daughters.
People in hospital are only listed by initials.

On Irish Genealogy
If the name has an O or Mc try leaving a space between the O and the rest or leave it out entirely.
Try using just the first and last letters of the name with an * between them.

And bear in mind many peoples deaths were never registered. They didn't need the death cert for anything so never bothered.

There may be a burial record.

Thank you. Very useful to know.

If I thought it worth it, how would I go about finding burial records?

Don’t know much about Belfast records,
There is this site.

I’m sure there will be others who know Belfast records much better than me.

Unless there are other sites to check?

The indexes are on ancestry, findmypast, familysearch. Do check them for possibles. Occasionally they have been be harder to find on irishgenialogy.ie, since they have replaced the original indexing with their own when linking to images.

If they were Roman Catholic, then try Milltown Cemetery.

That site covers burials at Belfast City Cemetery, Roselawn and Dundonald. If you don't find the person you are looking for check to see if any family buried there then on their page click on the link to check other burials in the same plot.
Lots of Belfast people burial at Carnmoney also-

You can search deaths on GRONI as well- https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/

It would also be worth search for a death before 1901 census if you haven't done so already in cause the husband should have been listed as widower rather than married.

You can also search Irish newspapers on Find My Past- free searches can provide quite a bit of detail with persistence and luck-
