James Johnston, death, July 23,1881 Allegheny City, Pennsylvania
« on: Thursday 16 May 24 04:31 BST (UK) »
Hello. James Johnston died July 23,1881 in Allegheny City, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania and his wife was Jane Orr. His father was Matthew but I don't have his mother's name. Hoping that a death certificate or an obituary might reveal that. I do have many children for James and Jane but I don't know which ones were surviving at his death, and where they might be and who their spouses were.
Thanks for any help
Peggy

Someone will correct if wrong but  statewide registration did not start until 1906  :-\

Registration of Deaths, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, 1893-1905, Index.

Statewide registration of deaths in Pennsylvania began in January 1906. Records prior to 1906 were kept by the individual counties or cities under various laws and time periods.

This may be the death record for son George, since he wasn't mentioned in Jane's obituary - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:H5HQ-D3W2

Obituary for son John - https://www.newspapers.com/article/pittsburgh-post-gazette-obituary-for-joh/147490582/

Obituary for son Samuel - https://www.newspapers.com/article/pittsburgh-post-gazette-obituary-for-sam/147490957/

Last surviving sibling from that generation appears to be Nana Green, who lived to 102 with various survivors, including one great-great-grandchild - https://www.newspapers.com/article/pittsburgh-post-gazette-obituary-for-nan/147490905/

Hello Sandra, thank you for all this wonderful information. You have definitely found the right family, judging by the names of the children. And the right obit for Jane, whose death I had as 1906 but it was 1905. That was a fabulous find and it had a lot of good information.
They reportedly had a daughter Ann in 1856 who’s not on the 1860 so must have died young. Same with Jenny born about 1859 who is on the 1860 but not the 1870 or 1880. Son James born about 1862 is not on the 1870.
Nancy born about 1865 would be Hanna on the 1880 and Nannie on 1870. Probably the enumerator heard wrong in 1880. Nancy is the one who married John Ballentine Green obviously after 1880. Elizabeth is the one who married Samuel Balzer Rheam, senior so they must’ve had a son Samuel.
James and Jane had a son John McClelland Johnston, July 13, 1873 and James also had a brother John McClelland Johnston born abt 1825 but I don’t know if his brother John McClelland Johnston emigrated and I don’t have a date of death for brother John although son John died Mar 6, 1931 in Pittsburgh. Daughter Elizabeth Rheam died July 24, 1923 and I do have her death certificate. Son Samuel G Johnston reportedly died 1918.
Thanks again, Sandra.
Oh, I have just seen your latest posting of deaths and obits. I will check them out and get back to you.

Once again, Sandra, you have found the right people and the right dates of death. I was obviously wrong with regard to Samuel and I never would’ve looked for his death in New Mexico. His year of birth was 1870 though which is verified by the various censii. Thanks for the death certificate.
Thanks also for the dates of death of George and Nancy. Nancy certainly lived to a ripe old age.
James and Jane had a daughter Margaret about 1867 who died about 1885.
Thank you, Sandra.
